Review of "Siren" 6/14/18 by Suzanne
airs Thursdays on Freeform

This is a neat scifi-like show about a small town celebrating the history of mermaids (sirens, really). The mermaids are real, though, and have a terrible history with the town.

One siren is caught by a fishing boat. It's clear that she is strong and deadly. A military team arrives and takes away the siren, and the man that she injured. Meanwhile, her sister is missing her, so she goes ashore, disguised as a human woman, to find her.

There are many characters, but the hero is Ben, who finds the siren and tries to help her. He also tries to help his friends (from the fishing boat) figure out where the government took their friend. Finally, his family has a long history of hunting sirens, or mermaids as they call them. He's learning about his dark family history.

It's a really interesting show. I hope Freeform keeps it around for a while. They have a history of canceling scifi shows that I like. I still don't forgive them for canceling Kyle XY, Secret Circle and Nine Lives of Chloe King!

What if there were something sinister swimming beneath the sea’s surface? In Freeform’s new original drama “Siren,” the coastal town of Bristol Cove, known for its legend of once being home to mermaids, is turned upside down when a mysterious girl (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the quaint village. Using their resources, marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) must work together to find out who and what drove this mermaid out of her home, and are there more like her out there?

The series stars Eline Powell (“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”) as Ryn, Alex Roe (“The 5th Wave”) as Ben Pownall, Fola Evans-Akingbola (“Game of Thrones”) as Maddie Bishop, Ian Verdun (“Lucifer”) as Xander McClure, Rena Owen (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Helen Hubbell and Sibo Mlambo (“Teen Wolf”) as Donna.

“Siren” is based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White who both serve as executive producers. Emily Whitesell (“Finding Carter”) is on board as showrunner and executive producer. Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb are also attached as executive producers.
