The Orville

Review of "The Orville" 9/26/17 by Suzanne
airs Thursday on FOX

This show tries to be both a scifi show similar to "Star Trek" and a comedy. It fails as both.  It's an obvious spoof of "Star Trek" in just about every way, but it's not nearly as good as any of the Star Trek series.  It probably has a bigger budget than most of them, but it's not particularly innovative or entertaining as a scifi show. It prefers to take old scifi TV show tropes and try to make fun of them.

Unfortunately, it's not very funny. Whether you're a die-hard Seth McFarlane fan, or not, you probably won't laugh much. I love his show "Family Guy," but this one isn't even as funny as "The Cleveland Show." I'm guessing that McFarlane really wanted to do a Star Trek show, but he couldn't get Paramount to hire him, so the only way he could do it, without getting sued, is to claim that it's satire. Yet he didn't want to put as much work into it as he does his other comedies, so the jokes fall flat.

If this were 1975 (when there were few other scifi shows around), then I'd probably watch it because back then, we were desperate to watch anything remotely scifi- or fantasy-oriented.  Now, however, in the Second Golden Age of TV, there are way too many good shows to watch, to bother wasting my time on this.

Besides the poor writing and production values, Seth McFarlane isn't charismatic enough to be the hero of this show. He should stick to being a voice actor. I used to think he was handsome, but he doesn't come off that way in this show.  The supporting cast does their best, especially Scott Grimes ("ER") and Penny Johnson Jerald (who actually was in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), but the characters are as flat as the jokes.

From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted,” “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey”), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The U.S.S. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Captain, Ed Mercer, and Adrianne Palicki (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”) as his ex-wife, who’s assigned as his First Officer.
