Liar stars

Review of "Liar" 10/5/17 by Suzanne
Airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on Sundance.

This is a top notch UK drama about a woman who accuses a handsome doctor of rape after one date. It's a thrilling suspense story that keeps you guessing about whether the doctor is innocent or guilty. It reminds me a little of "Broadchurch," except it's not seen just from the police point of view.

Ioan Gruffud ("Forever") is always outstanding, and he's great here as the surgeon who seems very honest in his protests of innocence. Joanne Froggatt ("Downton Abbey") is very good and intense as the schoolteacher, Laura, who accuses him. She definitely seems like she's been through a trauma. You have to hope that she's the one telling the truth, though. It will be very disappointing otherwise.

I'm really enjoying this miniseries...I hate to think of Gruffud as a bad guy, though. He usually plays the hero for a reason! This is one of the few new shows I've added to my DVR this Fall, and the only one that's not a superhero show.

LOS ANGELES, CA – July 29, 2017 – SundanceTV announced today the taut psychological thriller “Liar” will premiere Wednesday, September 27th at 10p/9c. The six-part series, which was created, written and executive produced by BAFTA and Golden Globe® nominated producers and screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams’ of Two Brothers Pictures (“The Missing ,” “Fleabag”) and co-produced with ITV and All3 Media, stars Golden Globe winner Joanne Froggatt (“Downton Abbey”) and BAFTA’s Sian Phillips Award recipient Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four).

“Liar” introduces Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) a bright and dedicated teacher, and Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd), a renowned surgeon whose son is a student at Laura’s school. After a seemingly innocent date, a series of volatile accusations capsize their lives. Secrets and lies slowly unravel in a tense and gripping series where everyone is lying in some way until the truth ultimately reveals itself.

“SundanceTV’s gripping, suspenseful thriller, filled with betrayals and deceptions, makes the truth a key character in the story,” said Jan Diedrichsen, General Manager, SundanceTV and Sundance Now. “Deftly written by Harry and Jack Williams, and superbly acted by a cast led by Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd, ‘Liar’ is provocative and entertaining, and will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.”

Directors include executive producer James Strong (“Broadchurch,” “The Great Train Robbery,” “11-22-63”) and Sam Donovan (“Humans,” “The Living and the Dead,” “Utopia”).  Eliza Mellor (“The Living and the Dead,” “Poldark,” “Death Comes to Pemberley”) produces the series.
