The Gifted cast

Review of "The Gifted" 10/5/17 by Suzanne
Airs Mondays, 9/8c on FOX.

We've seen many shows before about people with superpowers that are misunderstood and feared by the public, and hunted down by secret government agencies: "The Tomorrow People" on The CW; "Alphas" on Syfy; and "Heroes" on NBC. However, they all lacked something this show has: Marvel comics history. These are mutants, like "The X-Men." In fact, the X-Men and other Marvel groups are mentioned in this series. They have disappeared, so the remaining mutants have a sort of underground railroad to help each other out. (I read that this is an "alternate timeline to the X-Men movies")

The show focuses on the Strucker family, headed by Reed (Stephen Moyer, "True Blood"), a district attorney who help put mutants away in camps. His wife, Caitlin (Amy Acker, "Person of Interest") finds out that their two teenaged children are mutants. Andy (Percy Hynes White) is bullied by older boys at a school dance when he strikes out with his new mutant powers (reminiscent of Carrie at the prom). His sister, Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind, "The Goldbergs") also has powers, that she's been hiding. In the first episode, the family gets hunted by the Sentinels (which we've seen in the movies and comics) and the government, but they get away, with the help of other mutants.

Other mutants in the series include some new ones made just for the show as well as comic heroes Polaris, Blink and Thunderbird. I enjoyed the special effects as well as the story. It was also great to see a cameo by Stan Lee!

The show has a great cast. Moyer and Acker are outstanding. Garret Dillahunt, who's also fantastic, will be playing a bad guy. The younger set also is very good. I've added this one to my DVR and I know it will continue to impress me.
