Speechless cast

"Speechless" review by Eva Diaz  9/23/16
Airs Wednesdays 8:30/7:30c on ABC

The ads for the show looked funny, so I wanted to this... and I was right - it is a very funny show! It's about the Dimeo family, and the funny situations they are placed in while they try to make a better life for their three children, one of whom is disabled (he has a severe form of Cerebral Palsy that prevents him from speaking). Minnie Driver is very funny as mom Maya Dimeo, who is determined to give her son JJ (Micah Fowler) a voice and a good experience in school, to the point where her kids have switched schools six times. This show does a wonderful job of promoting inclusion while also having heartwarming moments that will tug at your heart and at times make you shed a tear. I liked the show very much because this family seems to truly love each other, and in the end you realize that every family has problems but loves each other despite them.

The only problem that I can think of for this show is that in the past, shows that have featured disabled characters in them have not lasted on TV for very long. I give this show 5 out of 5 stars; to me, it's the perfect blend of comedy and serious issues that need to be addressed (without being preachy).  I think it will promote a better understanding of people with disabilities.  It's worth watching, and I think it will do well in-between "The Goldbergs" and "Modern Family."
MORE INFORMATION

Maya DiMeo (Minnie Driver) is a mom on a mission who will do anything for her husband Jimmy, her kids Ray, Dylan, and JJ, her eldest son with cerebral palsy. As Maya fights injustices both real and imagined, the family works to make a new home for themselves, and searches for just the right person to give JJ his "voice."

Speechless stars Minnie Driver as Maya DiMeo, John Ross Bowie as Jimmy DiMeo, Mason Cook as Ray DiMeo, Micah Fowler as JJ DiMeo, Kyla Kennedy as Dylan DiMeo and Cedric Yarbrough as Kenneth.

Scott Silveri (Friends) writes and is executive producer of the show, along with Fresh Off the Boat's Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. The series is from Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios.
