Dan and Chris

Review of "Making History" 2/28/17 by Suzanne
Premieres March 5 at 8:30/7:30c on FOX

This is a goofy show. A dopey guy college janitor, Dan () finds a time machine that his late father invented. He uses it to go back in time to the colonial era, where he does well for himself, especially with a woman named Deborah (). He's able to use modern songs and ideas to woo her. He accidentally stops the revolution from happening, so he gets a history professor, Chris () to go back in time with him, to make things right. That's the basic plot.

The show has a few laughs. It's kind of an interesting idea. It reminds me a little of "Last Man on Earth," but it's funnier, and less annoying, than that show. It seems to be jumping on the time travel bandwagon. Have you noticed - there are lots of shows now about time travel??!! What's up with that? We've got "Timeless," "Frequency," "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," "12 Monkeys," "Travelers," "Outlander," and "Doctor Who." Not to mention, they do quite a bit of time traveling in "The Flash." (More shows than you knew about, isn't it?)  Now there's not only this show, but the new one "Time After Time" on ABC. I guess "Continuum" was just a wee bit ahead of its...er, time....sorry, bad pun.

Seriously, I love scifi and time travel, but this is just too many time travel shows. As Captain Janeway said in "Star Trek: Voyager": "Time travel. Since my first day on the job as a Starfleet captain I swore I'd never let myself get caught in one of these godforsaken paradoxes - the future is the past, the past is the future, it all gives me a headache. "  That's how I feel sometimes when watching time travel shows.  Hopefully this one will give you more laughs than headaches!

MAKING HISTORY

(Sundays, 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT)

Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“The LEGO Movie,” “21 Jump Street”), and created and written by Julius “Goldy” Sharpe (FAMILY GUY, “The Grinder”), the new comedy MAKING HISTORY follows three friends from two different centuries as they try to balance the thrill of time travel with the mundane concerns of their present-day lives. It’s a rollicking historical adventure and a contemporary comedy about love, friendship and trying to fit in to an increasingly complex and impersonal world.

DAN (Adam Pally, “The Mindy Project,” “Happy Endings”), a facilities manager at a small Massachusetts college, recently discovered time travel and has been transporting himself back to the 1700s to spend time with the colonial woman for whom he’s fallen. In the present, Dan is misunderstood by all, and anxious that life is passing him by. But by claiming song lyrics, lines from movies and stand-up bits as his own in the 18th century, he’s absolutely hilarious – he gets the girl and makes friends.

But Dan’s actions in the past are messing up the present. That woman he’s dating is not just any woman. She’s Paul Revere’s daughter, DEBORAH (Leighton Meester, “Gossip Girl”), and Dan’s meddling causes her father to delay his famous ride, which may have altered the outcome of the entire American Revolution.

To set matters right, Dan enlists the help of a brilliant, polished and popular history professor at the college, CHRIS (Yassir Lester, “Girls,” “Key and Peele”), who’s now given the incredible opportunity to actually live the history he teaches.

Can Dan, Chris and Deborah save America as we know it? Can a woman from 1775 adapt to life in 2017? Can the three intrepid time travelers improve the past, help the helpless, fight for justice and find true love and friendship?

MAKING HISTORY is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. The series was created and written by Julius Sharpe.
