MacGyver cast

"MacGyver" review by Suzanne 9/24/16
Airs Fridays, 8/7c on CBS

This is not a good show. It's too mediocre to even call it bad.  If you like shows like "Hawaii Five-0" and "Scorpion," or "NCIS: Los Angeles," you might enjoy this one because it's really kind of a copy of those types of shows, more than it is a reboot of the original "MacGyver."  That is, it's an ensemble show where the heroes banter a lot while they work to take down the bad guys, and there's lot of action.

In the original MacGyver, he mostly worked alone, which is why he did the voice-overs. There was no one else for him to talk to, except for the audience. We wouldn't have known what was going on, otherwise. To have him do a voice-over now, when he has a whole team working with him, is just nonsensical. Voiceovers rarely work, anyway.

The dialogue is not very good in this show, either. Let's just admit this: the writing is not good.  George Eads is the only likable one in the cast, and he's playing a more aggressive role here than he did in "CSI," so he gets to use his fists (and other tools) on the bad guys. That's not what I want to see, either. The original MacGyver was about him helping people, not stopping terrorists or whatever. This was not a rah-rah super-patriot show. MacGyver had served in the military, but he was against guns and not too fond of government agencies (even though he did work for one).

Lastly, the main reason this show just doesn't work is the lead hero, MacGyver (played by Lucas Till). I think they hired him just because he has a jawline similar to Richard Dean Anderson (the original MacGyver).  Richard Dean Anderson (RDA as his fans refer to him) may have had the long hair and known a lot about science, but he was not a nerd or wuss. He had a rugged strength and masculinity that worked well in the show. Lucas Till lacks that masculinity as well as RDA's acting ability or charisma. I'm sorry to be mean, but it's true.  RDA was already a seasoned actor on "General Hospital" before he starred in "MacGyver." Perhaps they should have picked Steve Burton, Billy Miller or some other great soap actor to star in this show.  Even former Y&R actors Thad Luckinbill or Michael Graziadei would also have been just fine in this role.  Obviously they wanted someone in their 20's (or who could pass for it), rather than a good actor. RDA was 35 when he started on the show!

To think they canceled "Limitless," which was a pretty good show, for this. Not even to mention "The Good Wife" and "CSI: Cyber."  What a waste. I predict this show will not last long.

MACGYVER, a reimagining of the classic series, is an action-adventure drama about 20-something Angus “Mac” MacGyver, who creates a clandestine organization within the U.S. government where he uses his extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving and vast scientific knowledge to save lives. Joining his team on high-risk missions around the globe is maverick former CIA agent Jack Dalton and Patricia Thornton, ex-field agent turned director of operations and Riley Davis, an unpredictable computer hacker with a chip on her shoulder. At home, MacGyver is entertained by his ambitious roommate, Wilt Bozer. Under the aegis of the Department of External Services, MacGyver takes on the responsibility of saving the world, armed to the teeth with resourcefulness and little more than bubble gum and a paper clip.

Lucas Till (Angus “Mac” MacGyver)
George Eads (Jack Dalton)
Sandrine Holt (Patricia Thornton)
Justin Hires (Wilt Bozer)
Tristin Mays (Riley Davis)
