Review of "Harlots" 4/16/17 by Suzanne
Airs Wednesdays on HULU

This show is about prostitutes in London in the 18th century. It has a lot of sex, but it's really not so much about sex as it is about the women in these brothels - their power, their struggle, and how they lived, in a time with few rights or choices of their own.  It almost seems to me like a PBS show that has somehow gone to Showtime and been sexed up.

Despite its subject matter and all of the sex, it's not a bawdy romp. It's a fairly serious show with good actors and actresses. It's written and produced by women as well.

The stories are very compelling. If you have the time to watch it, you might find this show pretty addictive. It's not boring, that's for sure.  HULU shows a new episode each Wednesday, so you don't have to binge-watch it.

Harlots — premiering March 29th.

Written, directed and produced by brilliant women, Harlots centers around two feuding brothels and the bustling sex trade in Georgian London, but this drama is far more than just a show about heaving bosoms and male gratification.  Executive producers, Alison Owen and Debra Hayward and executive producer/writer Moira Buffini, created a series that flips the script on a profession shrouded by female objectification.

Margaret Wells (Morton) struggles to reconcile her roles as brothel owner and mother to daughters Charlotte (Findlay) and Lucy (Smyth). When her business comes under attack from Lydia Quigley (Manville), a rival madam with a ruthless streak, Margaret must fight back even if it means losing her family and possibly her life. Harlots is a powerful family drama set in 18th Century London that offers a brand new take on the city’s most valuable commercial activity – sex.

Cast: Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville, Jessica Brown Findlay and Eloise Smyth.

Crew: Harlots is a co-production with ITV created and executive produced by Moira Buffini and Alison Newman. Executive produced by Alison Owen, Debra Hayward and Alison Carpenter.
