Handmaid's Tale

"Handmaid's Tale" review by Eva Diaz  4/14/17
Premieres Wednesday, April 26th on HULU

I wanted to watch this series because I had heard about the movie and the book. I thought it might be interesting, but it tends to drag on a bit. Also, the episodes are a bit too long for me. The plot is simple: the goverment has been taken over by religious fundamentalists. They subjugate the population, particularly women. Due to a problem with low population growth, they force women to be come "handmaids" who bear children for them. It reminds me a bit of the book "1984" (another story about a Dystopian future) becauise the people in this world have people watching them all of the time (called eyes). The people in charge of the goverment in this future world follow the Old Testament of the Bible exactly as it is written (via their own interpretation). The people who sin are killed or beaten into doing as they are told because they feel that the world will be better if they follow the rules. They're not allowed to express their own thoughts. Offred (Elizabeth Moss, the star of the show) had a daughter and a husband before she was taken by the goverment to be a handmaid; her real name was June. Offred and some of her other frends struggle to not be brainwashed by this govermental group. She also tries to escape so that she can find her daughter .

The show has a very interesting story; if you like these types of alternative futures, you should like this show. It's not, however, my kind of show because it is way too violent. However, it is well-written, the acting is great, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. You never know what's going to happen next.

I give this show 4 out of 5 stars. I just wish it wasn't so violent. If you watch it, and like the story, but not the violence, I guess you can cover your eyes. There are also some explicit sex scenes that don't need to be there. They don't advance the story. I also think the episodes are too long, but the good part about streaming is that you can start watching an episode one day and finish watching it the next day.

The drama series, based on the award-winning, best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The Handmaid’s Tale comes to Hulu from MGM Television and is created, executive produced and written by Bruce Miller and executive produced by Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Ilene Chaiken.

Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, and O-T Fagbenle.
