Review of "Claws" 6/28/17 by Suzanne
Airs Sundays 9/8c on TNT

This is really not my kind of show; I don't like shows where there are no good guys, just some bad people and really bad people. However, the characters are great, and the writing is compelling. It really did draw me in.

Niecy Nash ("Scream Queens," "Soul Man" et al.) plays Desna, who runs a small nail salon in a strip mall in Florida.  She's dreamed of buying a bigger, classier salon, so she's agreed to laundry money for the local crime boss and his drug clinic.  She's having regular sex with one of the crime boss's main guys, Roller.  We get to know all of the other women who work in the salon, such as Polly (Carrie Preston), who recently got out of prison; Quiet Ann (Judy Reyes), their lesbian bouncer; Jennifer (Jen Lyon), a tough blonde; and Virginia (Karrueche Tran), a beautiful, young and ambitious girl that they hired while Polly was gone.  The other main character is

The people of this show are criminals and trashy people. They do terrible things. Yet somehow, the writers make you care for Desna and her crew. A shocking thing happens at the end of the first episode, which they then have to deal with in the second episode.

The other main characters are the mobster, Clay, AKA Uncle Daddy (Dean Norris); Desna's brother, Dean, who is mentally disabled (Harold Perrineau), and the crooked Doctor Brickman (Jason Antoon) of the clinic.

It should be a fun, wild ride for anyone who watches the show. It's not as dark as most shows about drugs. I think it's really supposed to be a comedy, but it's not that funny.

Claws is a midnight-dark, wickedly funny meditation on female badness set in a South Florida nail salon. It follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. Claws is about good women caught in bad places with worse men. It's the story of hardworking women trying to get by in this economy, set against the surreal, bright, gritty landscape of Florida and the luscious, absurd, extreme excesses of the crime world.
