Pamela Adlon (Sam) and Hannah Alligood (Frankie)

"Better Things" review by Suzanne 9/10/16
Airs Thursdays 10/9c on FX

If you liked the FX show "Louie," then you'll probably love this one, too.  Louis CK is one of the creators of the show, along with star Pamela Adlon. Adlon was also a producer on his show and played his sometimes-girlfriend Pamela. This show has the same wit, but with a more feminie slant to it.

Like Louie, Sam is a divorced parent with girls, a struggling actor who's just trying to get through her life and raise her kids.  She has a bit of a sarcastic outlook (not as dour as Louie, who always seemed like he was such a pathetic schlub that he might just end it all one day), but she's still hopeful.

So far, the show's better than "Louie," which to me was often overly-slow and self-indulgent. I'm not saying it's the funniest show in the world, but it is definitely interesting and entertaining. I hope it will get funnier. It's also the kind of show, like Louie, that critics and entertainment industry people will no doubt love.  Check it out and see for yourself. I enjoyed the first episode but would like to see more.

Better Things is a new comedy series on FX co-created by Pamela Adlon and Louis C.K., starring Adlon as “Sam Fox,” a single, working actor with no filter trying to raise her three daughters – “Max” (Mikey Madison), “Frankie” (Hannah Alligood) and “Duke” (Olivia Edward) – in Los Angeles. She is mom, dad, referee and the cops.

Sam also watches out for her mother, “Phil” (Celia Imrie), an English expatriate, who lives across the street. Sam’s just trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters’ lives, have fun with a friend or two and also — just maybe — squeeze in some private time once in a while.

Better Things premieres Thursday, Sept. 8th on FX.
