TV Show Reviews
"Atlanta" review by Suzanne
Airs Tuesdays 10/9c on FX
I like this show. Although it's a drama, it has a lot of
humor as well. It has a nice laidback vibe. Donald Glover
("Community") created the show and stars in it as Earn
Marks, a young smart guy who hasn't really done much yet
with his life. He lives with his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa
(Zazie Beetz), and they share a child. Vanessa seems to know
that he's not really mature enough for a real relationship.
Earn finds out that his cousin Alfred is a new rapper by
the name of "Paper Boi" (Brian Tyree Henry). He and
their friend Darius (Keith Stanfield) try to help Alfred get
more famous and rich, so they can do better in life and help
their families. Darius is a weird kind of guy who says
strange things (kind of like Kramer on "Seinfeld"). Of
course, things don't always go so well for the guys in their
attempts to break into the music biz.
I've noticed that there are a ton of new shows out now
featuring African-Americans, as well as written and produced
by them. The success of shows like "Empire" and all of the
Shondaland shows on ABC are probably what made them
possible. They are all very different shows, though.
Largely, the quality seems to be good.
Get the word out. This is a cool and fun show.
Better than anything else FX has ever done.
