American Housewife cast

"Notorious" review by Eva Diaz  9/23/16
Airs Tuesdays 8:30/7:30c on ABC

I wanted to watch this show because the commercials looked funny.  The show centers around Katy Otto (Katy Mixon ) and her husband Greg (Dedrich Bader); the two actors have wonderful chemistry together. The Otto family decides to rent a house in a wealthy neighborhood in Westport, Connecticut so that their children can have a better education. The showis kind of a mix of "The Middle," "Rosanne," and "Family Ties" because they have characters in the show that are similar to all of those shows. The stand out stars from the younger cast are Daniel Dimaggo (Oliver), who is basically a modern, younger version of the money- loving Alex P. Keaton from "Family Ties." Oliver is funny and very smart, and he often tells his mother the truth when he feel she has gone too far in her schemes. Anna-Kat (Julia Butters) is cute and sweet; she reminds me of a female Brick Hecht. I think she steals the show.

This show is funny and worth watching.  However, if you're easily offended, you might not like it because the show isn't politically correct at all; they tell the truth often, referring to characters by their physical attributes instead of their names, and it has other aspects that might offend people. I give this show 3 1/2 stars because I am not sure if network TV is ready for this type of humor.  At its core, The Ottos are a family that love each other, and they do their best to live life with love and humor.

Katie Otto, a confident, unapologetic wife and mother of three, raises her flawed family in the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, filled with "perfect" mommies and their "perfect" offspring. Katie's perfectly imperfect world is upended when her neighbor's decision to move notches her up from her ideal social standing and sets her on a path to ensure that doesn't happen, regardless of the consequences.

Luckily, her husband, Greg Otto, supports her in every way possible, but with a dash of reality thrown in as they work to ensure their children do not end up like everyone else. However, that isn't going to be easy when her oldest teenage daughter, Taylor, is already set on the "perfect" path; middle son Oliver has one goal in life: to be rich; and her youngest, Anna Kat, needs a little extra help navigating life. Then there are her friends, Angela and Doris, who help Katie keep it all in perspective and are the allies she needs in a town where "keeping it real" is not a compliment.

Despite her flaws and unconventional ways, Katie ultimately only wants the best for her kids and will fight tooth-and-nail to instill some good old-fashioned values in them, if it's the last thing she does. The series stars Katy Mixon as Katie Otto, Diedrich Bader as Greg Otto, Meg Donnelly as Taylor, Daniel DiMaggio as Oliver, Julia Butters as Anna-Kat, Carly Hughes as Angela and Ali Wong as Doris. "American Housewife" is written by Sarah Dunn ("Spin City," "Bunheads") and produced by Kapital Entertainment and ABC Studios. Sarah Dunn, Aaron Kaplan, Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz are executive producers. Ruben Fleischer directed and was executive producer of the pilot.
