"Recovery Road" review by Suzanne 1/25/16
Premieres Monday, January 25 on Freeform

This is a very compelling show. It's a fairly realistic (for TV) show about a young teen who has to go into recovery after being caught with vodka at her school. It's based on a teen novel. The heroine, Maddie (Jessica Sula) is being raised by her mom (Sharon Leal) after her dad died. She spends a lot of time partying and it gets her into trouble. I know lots of people have had this problem, as teens, or college students, or later. The show tells what people go through when they have these addictions at a young age. There are many interesting characters, between her friends at high school and the other people in the recovery program.

There used to be a really gritty TV show about addiction called "The Cleaner" starring Benjamin Bratt. It was hard to watch because it was very realistic about was also too depressing to watch. This show is not nearly as depressing as that one, it's more uplifting. People need more hope, I think, that they can solve their problems.

My dad was an alcoholic who never got treatment, so I really only know the worst part of these kind of addictions. I know that there are many people who get help and really turn their lives around. I have friends who went through AA and other programs. I can't even imagine going through these things.

The show is a really good drama, but it's also educational, especially to teens. You watch the first three episodes on the official site! If you know someone with a problem, try to get them to watch it or to get help. Don't miss the show because it's a very good drama.
