Almost everyone I know watches and loves "The Walking
Dead." I love scifi/fantasy/supernatural shows, but I hate
zombies. First of all, they're gross. They drool, they have
dead skin and other parts, hanging off them, and they eat
human flesh and brains! Also, they're just creepy. The
original movie "Night of the Living Dead" is great, and it
shows almost nothing gross, but it's still too much for me.
So I never saw this newer show on AMC, even though everyone
tells me how good it is.
I figured I might as well try to watch this new spin-off,
or prequel, to see if it's a little less gross or scary.
Well, it's both gross and scary. On the other hand, it's not
nearly as gross (at least so far, in the first episode) as,
say, "The Strain," or "American Horror Story."
The show takes place right before the zombie virus starts
infecting everyone. A teenaged junkie wakes up to find one
of his friends munching on another friend. He freaks out,
runs, and gets hit by a car. The rest of the show is about
him, and his family, and how they're dealing with him being
a junkie, and with their split-up family. (The parents are
divorced, and the mom, Madison, is dating another divorced
Gradually, we see civilization fall apart as the zombie
virus spreads. It's kind of a soap opera with zombies. It's
got great acting and writing, although the story does creep
along pretty slowly (and I mean CREEP!). Have fun watching
it if you don't mind zombies.
Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead
is a gritty drama that
explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the
lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people
come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a
mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little
stability high school guidance counselor
and English teacher
have managed to assemble. The everyday
pressure of blending two families while dealing with
resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a
back seat when society begins to break down. A forced
evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes
hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent
themselves or embrace their darker histories.
