"Colony" review by Suzanne 1/9/16
Premieres Thursday, January 14, 10/9c on USA Network

There are a lot of alien invasion shows in the past decade. Most have not been successful.  TNT's "Falling Skies" was one of the few successful shows. That show was very gritty and had lots of violence and death, but it was not the best-written series around at times. It seemed very manipulative, to me, in many ways. There's been a slew of other similar shows, from Syfy's recent miniseries "Childhood's End," that was very good, to many other short-lived attempts, such as "Invasion," "V," "The Whispers" and "Extant."  Syfy's "Defiance" was very good but only lasted a few seasons.

I believe that what does these shows in is the writing.  Most scifi fans are not like me. I'll watch almost anything that has vampires, aliens, witches, spaceships, time travel, superheroes or werewolves in it (not that I have time to watch them all!). Most scifi fans are very particular about the shows and how well they're written.  If you can't even get the scifi fans to watch your scifi, then what hope do you have of getting "mainstream" fans to watch?

My point is, I think "Colony" is a show that anyone should like because it's very well written, has good characters, and it has lots of action.  The only possible thing that might derail it is if they never show the aliens. That might frustrate too many people. We'll have to wait and see on that point.

USA is showing the first episode at http://colonytv.com  You have to register and/or login to watch it.  It shows us what life is like in Los Angeles after an alien invasion. We never see the aliens, just their ships. Some humans have collaborated with the aliens and are helping to enforce "order."  Humans live in fear that they might be sent to the mysterious "factory" or be caught outside after curfew.  People horde food and supplies, trading when they can. Each community is shut off from the others, and no travel is allowed.  There's a resistance group that sometimes blows things up.

The main family is the "Sullivan" family, led by Will (star Josh Holloway, former star of "Intelligence" and "Lost") and his wife, Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies of "The Walking Dead" and many other shows). They seem to have a great little family, with their son and daughter, but we learn quickly that everyone is hiding secrets and their lives are about to change in major ways (even more than living an oppressed life in a land that's been invaded by aliens).

The show is not just scifi and drama; it's also a spy show. That makes it even more interesting. I can't wait to see more! The show was created by Carlton Cuse of "Lost," "The Strain," and "Returned," and Ryan Condal, who wrote last year's movie "Hercules" starring The Rock.

I don't want to give too much away; I urge you to watch the pilot because it's very good. I would say it's much better than any other alien-related drama around, and it's way better than Holloway's previous show "Intelligence." I hope it's a big hit for USA Network. I love a good scifi show.

Here's a good article about it: Don't call 'Colony' an alien invasion drama, says Carlton Cuse
