The first episode with Reese Witherspoon

"Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris" review by Suzanne 9/16/15
Airs Tuesdays, 10/9c on NBC

It's hard to know how to judge this new show. On the face of it, it was entertaining. It had a lot of humor, some music, and lots of fun. Some of the jokes fell flat, but mostly it was worth watching. The only thing that struck me as odd was that it seemed at times to be more like a game show than a variety show. I guess I expected them to try to have a show like the old ones I saw in the 70's, like "Carol Burnett Show" or "Donny & Marie," but it makes sense that they would want to update it to today's audiences.

From what I've seen, they were trying to make it more like the daytime talk show "Ellen," except without the talky parts ( and with more music).  No one has more boundless energy than NPH, and he was the perfect one to host this show. The fact that it's done live is amazing.  Then again, he's hosted the Tonys and Emmys, so he's used to live shows.

I just read this on the NBC site, so I guess this explains what they're going for: Based on the wildly popular British hit "Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway."  Of course, most of us haven't seen that show...but we hadn't seen "American Idol" or "Big Brother" before we stole those British shows, either.

Reese Witherspoon was last night's first guest, and she was also the guest announcer. Her voice is not really well suited for announcing, though. It's too high and nasal.  Also joining NPH were Pussycat doll Nicole Scherzinger, who sang her big hit. She otherwise joined in all of the fun and helped NPH out with various parts of the show. Another singer was Gloria Gaynor, who sang her hit "I Will Survive" for the karaoke competition that they had.  There were many other nameless performers as well, like dancers, roller skaters, plate spinners, et al.  There was a lot to see. They really packed a lot in the hour.

The game show aspect I mentioned earlier is that NPH gets involved with his audience and has many interactive segments. He had some information on some of the people in his audience. He invited this one couple down to the stage and revealed that he been there at many of their adventures, including their wedding. He showed videos and photos to prove it. It was pretty bizarre and almost creepy, but it was all in fun, and NPH awarded them a vacation give away, so they were very happy in the end.

He and Reese climbed some kind of dangerous-looking contraption, and she seemed a little annoyed with him at the end, that he hadn't told her what they were doing, but I don't know if that was real or if they had set that up beforehand. That's really the problem with these shows. Reality shows have made us all skeptical and suspicious.  Is the show really "live?"  Did he really follow that couple to various places, or was that trick photography? Were he and Reese ever really in danger of falling? I guess we'll never know.

Anyway, it's fun to watch and really, much more entertaining than any other show on TV as far as I can tell. I'll probably keep watching and see what other tricks they pull out of their hats. I do like Neil Patrick Harris!
