Benders cast

"Benders" review by Suzanne 10/12/15
Airs Thursdays at 10pm on IFC

This comedy is about four guys who play hockey for fun. They act just like regular guys. That's one of the things I like about it. They're like real people. The show is funny, though. It made me laugh quite a bit. I was surprised because I thought it was going to be like "The League" or some other TV show where they try to act like real guys, but it doesn't really work.

I'm not being racist when I use these descriptions (They use them in the show): One of the guys is a fat guy with lots of disposable income. One of them is an Asian guy. One is a big dumb Italian guy. Another is a Jewish guy. He seems to be the only one that's married. They all drink a lot of beer, too.

I'm not saying it's the funniest show on TV, but it's pretty funny. I found myself thinking about it later on in the week, too, and laughing again when I thought about it.  It's not highbrow humor or anything. It's just silly jokes, but it's funny. What else could you want in a comedy? Oh, and there's only 8 episodes, so you want to hurry and watch them.

MORE INFORMATION:

This fall, IFC launches a brand new eight-episode original hockey comedy Benders. Starring Lindsey Broad (The Office, 21 Jump Street), Chris Distefano (Girl Code, The Half Hour), Mark Gessner (Orange is the New Black, The Blacklist), Ruy Iskandar (Gotham, The Blacklist) and Andrew Schulz (Guy Code, co-creator & host of Brilliant Idiots podcast) Benders follows a team of friends bonded by an irrational obsession with their menís ice hockey team, The Chubbys. Benders premieres Thursday, October 1 at 10:00pm ET/PT.

Paul Rosenberg (Schulz) is the insecure leader whose involvement with the team causes daily havoc for him and his wife Karen (Broad). Along for the ride are Paulís best friends Anthony (Distefano), the charmer who schemes his way through life; Dicky (Gessner), the wealthy hedge fund manager whose answer to everything is in his wallet; and Sebalos (Iskandar) the slacker on a misguided search for his purpose in life. While their hockey skills may be limited their passion is not, as evidenced by the chaos their devotion to the game creates in their everyday lives.

Creators Jim Serpico and Tom Sellitti are executive producing along with their Apostle partner Denis Leary.
