TV Show Reviews
"Mulaney" review by Suzanne
Airs Sundays 9:30/8:30am on FOX
I'll give you fair warning here that I don't like most of
today's sitcoms. "Two and a Half Men" is sometimes very
funny, when it's not being stupid or gross. I enjoy "Big
Bang Theory", but it rarely has me in stitches. I can take
or leave most of the rest. I grew up watching some very good
shows like "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Barney Miller", which
can both still make me laugh. Heck, even "Hogan's Heroes"
can still make me laugh. I've watched TV for a long time,
and I enjoyed many more recent shows such as "Will & Grace"
and "Frasier", but most of the 21st Century sitcoms just
don't seem funny to me. I think it's because they don't
really write very many jokes any more. They're more
interested in having quirky characters or silly people
trying to act funny.
I do laugh a lot at shows with actual jokes, like The
Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Real Time with Bill
Maher, as well as many stand up specials and shows.
Occasionally there'll be a good show in "South Park" or
"Family Guy", but they're mostly well past their prime and
have run out of ideas or jokes.
This new show, "Mulaney" has some very likable actors and
fun characters, but most of the jokes are not that funny.
For a show about comedians, that's pretty unforgivable.
It's not "Seinfeld" or even "Louie". Like those shows,
it starts out with some shows by the star, stand-up comedian
John Mulaney. He's pretty funny, but I don't know if he can
really carry the whole show.
Martin Short plays his weird boss, and Elliot Gould plays
his quirky neighbor. I like both, but Short can be really
annoying, which he is here. I would watch the show if the
first episode made me laugh. But then again, what do I know?
I stopped watching "Seinfeld" because the first episode
didn't make me laugh, but then later I found out that was
really funny, and I had to go back and watch the previous
episodes to learn that my first impression was not that
correct. That was before DVR's, though, so I rarely go back
and watch anything once I've decided it's not worth my time.
