Wow. There are a lot of people who hate this show, and
it's barely started airing! I read a lot of reviews of the
show, and they all seem to hate it. I don't really get that.
It's not the funniest show in the world, but it's not
The show is set in the modern advertising world. The
show's protagonist, Thom (Steve Coogan) narrates the show as
well. He's a middle-aged guy feeling like the advertising
biz is passing him by for young people and social media.
This is a pretty common theme nowadays. That aspect of the
show reminds me of the new TVLAND show "Younger." I guess
the heroine in that show is more sympathetic because she's
divorced from her cheating ex-husband and couldn't get a job
because she was 40. This guy has a good job, and a beautiful
house and loving family. So hearing him complain about
everything ticks some reviewers off a bit.
I think they're just taking the show a bit too seriously.
It's a comedy. The guy in the show may be bitter, but to me
he's just having fun, even if he's complaining about not
being happy. He knows that his life is good and he's
complaining about stupid things, but he's still not happy.
There are a lot of fantasy segments in the show, and
sometimes you're not sure which is real and which is
fantasy. In that sense, it's following in the tradition of
"Family Guy" and the old HBO show "Dream On," as well as the
old cartoon "My World and Welcome To it," based on James
Thurber. In fact, I think this whole show has a kind of
Thurber-esque quality to it. It's light humor. It's not
supposed to be hilarious or deep. It's just a light half
hour to pass the time. Like reading a New Yorker cartoon.
Very droll. There's a funny-but-creepy scene with Keebler
Elves in the first episode.
I always want to say that we've all only watched ONE
episode, so it may get better over time. It's really hard to
judge any TV show from one episode, but especially a half
hour comedy. Check it out yourself and let me know if you
like it or not! Of course, since it's on Showtime, it does
have sex, nudity, and bad language. I don't have Showtime,
so I guess I have to wait for the DVD. You can watch the
first episode on the Showtime site and On Demand.
