"Gracepoint" review by Suzanne
Premieres October 2 on FOX

I watched the first 7 episodes of this, and I can't wait to see the last 3. This is based on a British show "Broadchurch", which starred David Tennant. Tennant is reprising his role here, only with an American accent. The show is set in a small Northern California town. I think his accent is pretty good, but there have been people who complained about it. If that kind of thing really bothers you, don't watch. However, you'll be missing out on a really good mystery.

I had heard that "Broadchurch" is really, but I haven't watched it yet because I didn't want it to effect how I viewed this version, or my review of it. It's been my experience that remakes of any kind are almost never as good as the original, however. It's the comparison that usually kills the second show. If you're a fan of the remake, though, and haven't seen the original, that can be helpful.

The story is a very compelling mystery, which is not to say that it's not without its flaws. How many shows have we seen like this where a child has been murdered, and the detective(s) investigating have demons, and doggedly search for the killer, despite their own problems, and then everyone on the show is a suspect, and they all have their own secrets? There's usually many suspicious-looking if not downright creepy people, including usually, an old lady or old guy. This one has both. The tone of these shows is almost always slow and creepy. I guess we can blame "Twin Peaks" for all of this, but it may go back even further than that - I don't know. Perhaps "Bad Day at Black Rock" or some other old movie?

I would say that "Gracepoint" is sometimes infuriatingly slow, but it's not as badly slow as "The Killing" or "The Bridge" can be.  It really varies. Sometimes you want to fast-forward, but other times a lot of stuff suddenly happens. You don't want to miss anything important. I would say it's about 7 1/2 hours without commercials, but they probably could have edited it down to 5, easily.

Besides that, though, it's very well done. The acting is fantastic, and they have an amazing cast that includes Anna Gunn ("Breaking Bad") and the legendary Nick Nolte. The only person I didn't like was the guy who plays Mark Salano, Michael Peña. I thought he was kind of dull and not the best actor, but then again, his role is a tough one because he has to tread a fine line between being a grieving father and being a cheating husband who may or may not be a killer.

The main plot concerns the murder of a young boy, and the detectives who investigate it, and all of the people in the small town who are suspects or involved. I didn't think that they did a great job with making it feel like Northern California. To me, it looked more like Cedar Cove (which is supposed to be near Seattle), but it could have also been somewhere in the Northeast.

These are fairly picky things, though. Over-all, it's very enjoyable, if a bit sad and dour at times. There's a little bit of humor, most of it coming from the two leads. The mystery is great and I hope I won't be disappointed when I find out who the killer is. Then later I plan to go watch "Broadchurch"!

I'm interviewing David Tennant on Monday via conference call. I hope they've allotted enough time and that I get a chance to ask him a question. I'll make sure to put a link here, either way, after they send me the transcript of the call.

I'm really glad that network TV seems to be trying to be more like cable TV and have these miniseries and high quality shows.  I hope this one is a big success!

*UPDATE: Unfortunately, I think the show is a little too slow-building for the impatient American audiences. It's not going to be renewed for a second season. I just watched episode 9 and it's really good. I can't wait until the finale. I hope it's fabulous! Episode 9 airs December 4th on FOX so check it out. The show's finale is December 11th.

In 2005, it was announced that Tennant would take over as the 10th “Doctor Who,” and he quickly became one of the most popular actors to play the role, winning Best Actor at both the National Television Awards and the TV Quick Awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and a Welsh BAFTA for Best Actor in 2007. He has also been nominated as Best Actor in the Royal Television Society Awards for “Recovery” and “Single Father,” for which he also won the TV Choice Award. Among his other TV credits are “Blackpool,” “Learners,” “Einstein and Eddington,” “United,” “True Love,” “Spies in Warsaw,” “The Politician’s Husband” and the critically acclaimed “Broadchurch” for ITV 1, for which he won Best Actor at the TV Choice Awards 2013. He currently is in production on “Broadchurch 2.”

In addition to his film and television work, Tennant has also starred in numerous theater productions, including the widely praised Royal Shakespeare Company’s sold-out production of “Hamlet,” for which he won Best Actor at the Critics Circle Awards. His other work with the RSC includes “Love’s Labour Lost,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Comedy of Errors” and “As You Like It.”  He was nominated for Best Actor at the prestigious Olivier Awards for his role in “Lobby Hero” at the Donmar Warehouse.
