This is based on a book, which of course is based on real
life. I haven't read the book, so I can't say how they
compare. In some ways, the show reminds me of the ABC show
"Pan Am" from a few years ago. That was about a young,
pretty group of stewardesses back in the 60's. It was
somewhat of a soap opera. What elevates this show is that
it's based on real people, and also, the plot doesn't get
quite as convoluted. I think they do a very good job with
The show is about the wives of the first astronauts in
the U.S. Life magazine did a feature on them and they became
celebrities. Both the wives and husbands are under a
lot of stress from these dangerous jobs that have brought
them fame and fortune. They also have secrets, like cheating
spouses, drinking, divorce, and a lot more. It's fascinating
to see what went on back then.
The acting is outstanding. Two of the actors are from "Dexter"
and one is from "House,"
among a few other familiar faces. It shows a bit of what
life was like back then (as far as I can recall...I was very
little in the 60's) and how the "space race" affected us. I
hope that the show is very successful and gets more people
interested in space travel.
They also do a fine job helping us tell so many
characters apart, back in a time when hairstyles were not so
varied (and almost everyone is white). I've enjoyed the
episodes I've seen so far. It also reminds me somewhat of a
WGN show called "Manhattan," but this is more enjoyable
summer fluff. It's not quite as sexy as "Mistresses," but I
hope they bring it back next Summer! Check it out.
