"American Baking Competition" review by Sundi
Airs Wednesdays 8/7 on CBS

It is what it says it is. American Baking Competition on CBS is an uncomplicated show that knows exactly who will be watching and exactly what to offer them. Hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, it is a competition in the vane of Top Chef where the season kicks off with six amateur bakers that face a series of three challenges each week. Their “bakes” (as the show calls them) are judged by Paul Hollywood (whom Britain calls the George Clooney of baking) and Marcella Valladolid and there is the requisite sugar-and-spice element dynamic to the judging duo. Winners will take home $250,000, contract with Simon and Schuster for a book deal and will walk away with the title America’s Best Amateur Baker. It’s all pretty standard fare.

Where the show leaves off in originality and innovation, it makes up for in pluck and Americana. The hour-long show plays to the genre very well, and the selection of contestants is what makes this show’s cheeky wholesomeness one of its best attributes.. Personally, I am rooting for the Paula Deen-ish contestant that made a chocolate peanut butter bacon pie. What’s not to love about that? For folks who like to watch cooking, this will satisfy, if not amuse your sensibilities. For the rest of us, pie crust drama may not be enough to sustain us.
