"The Ultimate Fighter Live" review by Suzanne

The Ultimate Fighter Live

Series Premiere Event Friday March 9 on FX

FX has a new show that is all about extreme fighting, what they call mixed martial arts. The show not only has actual live fighting every Friday, but the fighters live all together in a house, like in "Big Brother", and the cameras follow them around all the time. So it's a reality show but also a competition. It sounds very interesting if you're into those kind of things.

They sent me a promo DVD where they discuss the show and show some scenes from it. It seems to fit in well with all of the extreme shows on FX. I just hope they don't fill up their schedule with this kind of show instead of great dramas.

As you might guess, it's not really my kind of show. I'm not a sports fan, and I particularly don't like boxing or other violent sports. I don't get why people want to see a bunch of guys pumped up on steroids beating each other up. And I'm not a big fan of reality shows, either. I would think that not having any women on the show would make it a bit boring.  Well, either this is a terrible idea or it will be a huge hit - stay tuned!

More Information:

The dawn of a new era for the Ultimate Fighting Championship® and its flagship series begins on Friday, March 9th as FX launches the inaugural season of THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE beginning at 9:00 PM ET/8:00 PM CT with a special two-hour premiere. The series then moves to Fridays at 10:00 PM ET/9:00 PM CT the following week for 12 consecutive weeks culminating in the championship fight on June 1st.

UFC Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White, along with Executive Producer Craig Piligian, have transformed THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE and it no longer is just a competition reality series; it will become a LIVE sporting event.

The first season of THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE on FX will feature fighters from the lightweight division (155 pounds). More than 500 prospective competitors from around the world auditioned to participate. Those 500 have been narrowed down to 42 through tryouts, cuts and background checks. Of the remaining 42 fighters, 32 will be selected to participate in the series premiere episode or “Fight In.” From there, 16 finalists will be broken up into two teams of eight, with each team living in a house together for the duration of the season. The fighters will train together under the supervision of their team’s respective coach. One fighter from each team will be selected by their coach to fight at the end of each episode and the right to advance in the competition. At the end of the season, one man will be crowned THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE Champion and receive a six-figure contract with the UFC.

The coaches selected for the two teams this season are current UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and former champion and current top contender Urijah Faber. In addition to their coaching duties, Cruz and Faber will be training for their rematch this summer. The first time they met, Faber successfully defended his title against the rising contender, but Cruz was able to unseat Faber in their second match to capture the title.

“We’re producing ground-breaking television with THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE and we can’t wait to kick this season off with FX in March,” White said. “It’s going to be can’t-miss TV. Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber are two incredible personalities who also happen to be two of the best fighters in the world. They genuinely dislike each other and I expect this to make for the best season yet.”

As part of the UFC’s landmark deal with FOX Sports Media Group, FX will televise two 13-week seasons of THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE annually for the next seven years.

“We believe that Dana, Lorenzo and Craig have come up with exciting new changes to the format THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE that will expand and grow the series,” said Chuck Saftler, Executive Vice President, FX Networks. “The fact that the fight at the end of every episode will now be televised live is certain to create a sense of urgency for UFC fans and will make the series even more compelling.”

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE is integral to the success of the UFC and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. It is as important to the UFC as the draft is to the NFL or American Idol is to the music business. The series seeks to find the next generation of UFC stars. The series’ previous incarnation, The Ultimate Fighter, was the launching pad for some of MMA’s greatest fighters including Rashad Evans, Kenny Florian, Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar and many others. For 14 seasons over the last seven years, The Ultimate Fighter established itself as one of the most intense and exciting competition reality series on television. In its previous format, each season was taped months in advance of its broadcast. This season the segments of events taking place in the house will be taped the week that episode airs, and the fight at the end of each episode will air live in the Eastern and Central time zones and on tape delay in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.

FX’s coverage of the UFC this year includes two seasons (26 weeks) of THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE, six major two-hour fight cards televised live nationally, and 14 live telecasts of preliminary fights preceding UFC pay-per-view telecasts.
