"Secrets of Eden"
review by Suzanne
Premieres Saturday, February 4, 8:00pm et/pt on Lifetime
I love John Stamos, so it is always great to see him in a
different role. I've never seen him as a pastor before, so this is very
different. In a small Vermont town, a woman and her husband are found dead, and
the pastor was having an affair with her, so he is the prime suspect. Stamos
narrates the show from the pastor's point of view, yet somehow he is still able
to keep it close to the vest as to whether he is guilty of the crime or not.
We see the story unfold, mostly in flashbacks, as the local
police detective, Catherine Benicasa (who is also a member of the same church!)
tries to prove that the pastor did it. It's based on a best-selling novel
by Chris Bohjalian.
I had a little problem with the ending. It seems far-fetched to
me that the person who did kill one of the people did it and expresses no
regret, given the close relationship between this person and the victim, despite
what type of person the victim was. I know that is very cryptic, and I'm sorry,
but I don't want to give away the ending and spoil it for you. I also didn't
like how the person didn't get punished properly. I'm sorry, but you should not
murder anyone, no matter how much they deserve it, unless it is self-defense.
This person wasn't even awake, so... that is pretty vile.
I thought the acting was pretty good in the movie. If all
ministers looked like Stamos, church attendance would go up, that's for sure! :)
JOHN STAMOS STARS IN THE NEW SEDUCTIVE, SCANDALOUS LIFETIME ORIGINAL MOVIE, SECRETS OF EDEN
Based on Chris Bohjalian’s New York Times Best-Selling Novel, Film Premieres February 4
LOS ANGELES, CA (January 6, 2012) – Emmy® nominated actor, producer and television icon John Stamos
(Glee, ER) returns to the small screen in the Lifetime Original Movie, Secrets of Eden, co-starring Anna Gunn
(Breaking Bad, The Practice), which is set to premiere on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 8:00PM ET/PT.
Based on Chris Bohjalian’s New York Times best-selling novel, Secrets of Eden unveils the shocking secrets
and facades of happiness that reside within a small, close-knit town after a gruesome tragedy occurs.
Secrets of Eden centers on Stephen Drew (Stamos), an adored small-town minister in Haverhill, Vermont and
the brutal and sadistic murder-suicide of Alice and George Hayward, the town’s most-beloved parishioners.
While the community never imagined such a destiny for the Haywards, dark secrets begin to surface, causing
many to realize they may not have been the perfect family everyone thought they were. When evidence of an
affair between Alice and Reverend Drew surfaces, Detective Catherine Benicasa (Gunn) suspects that the crime
may actually be a double-murder -- with the likable minister as the prime suspect. Now, Katie, the Hayward’s
orphaned 15-year old daughter, may be the only key to uncover the disturbing secrets of what happened behind
closed doors on that fateful night and the suffering they endured as a “not so perfect” family.
Secrets of Eden is executive produced by Craig Anderson (Lifetime’s Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy)
and Mary Young Leckie (Everest). Tawnia McKiernan (Burn Notice, Monk) directs.
