Love Handles: Couples in Crisis premieres May 31 at 10 pm/ 0 c

"Love Handles: Couples in Crisis" review by Suzanne
Premieres Tuesday, May 31, at 10 pm ET/9 C on Lifetime

This is a new reality show. You have seen some like it, such as The Biggest Loser or Shedding for the Wedding. Each one has its own twist, of course. In Love Handles: Couples in Crisis, they take some couples who are not only overweight, but having problems with their spouse or live-in lover. They not only get trim and fit, with a dietician, personal trainer, etc., but they also see a therapist for their problems getting along. I should say, though, that unlike those other shows, it is not a competition show. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, frankly. Anyway, the idea is kind of that being overweight may be linked to their emotional problems and contributes to their unhappiness.

There are two couples in the disk they sent to me. One is a white unmarried couple, and one is a black married couple. At first, the white couple seems to be more focused on being unhappy because they are both heavy. They work through their issues with anger, especially at their parents. The other couples had real troubles getting along. They are both heavy, but she looks a lot heavier than he does. She has a teenage son, and he is the step-father, so there is some complicated stuff going on.

I won't tell you how it works out in the end, but suffice it to say that it is a rewarding ending. I thought it was really interesting to watch. Aside from the crying, which I don't like to see, it was very educational. The only thing I really didn't like was that they made the husband give up his sugar free Kool-Aid and Jello. I guess because the dietician is convinced that they should only eat organic and healthy food. Sorry, but I am not parting with my sugar free food if you expect me to lose weight! :) And when I lost weight a few years ago, I would not have made it without the sugar free Jello. It was the only "sweet thing" I could eat.

Although the woman who created the show, SallyAnn Salsano, also created Jersey Shore, it is nothing like that show from what I can tell (I don't watch it). It is very interesting, healthy and educational, as well as exciting at times. I don't watch reality shows for fun, but this one is not bad, and I would watch it if I was watching TV and happened to catch it. You should definitely check it out if you like reality shows, particularly if you are interested in health, or dieting, or counseling. Also, this one seems more "real" than other reality shows. While I'm sure that some stuff was heavily edited or staged, it did not feel like it was.

ABOUT LOVE HANDLES: COUPLES IN CRISIS

Each one-hour episode of Love Handles: Couples in Crisis follows the drama when two overweight couples battle the bulge and their relationship problems. Through 60 days of challenging workouts and relationship therapy, the couples will explore how they've reached the breaking point in their lives and how to get back on track. They've blamed each other, sabotaged each other and avoided the issues that threaten to end their love and even their lives. The ultimate question they must ask themselves is, "Can their relationship be fixed or is it too late?"

In an ultimate testimony to the program's success, Salsano herself, succeeded in losing more than 100 pounds by changing her lifestyle and her relationship with her significant other. "Love Handles is very personal for me because I've experienced what these couples are going through emotionally and physically," said Salsano. "I've been there, so I know what makes a person in this situation happy, I know what makes them mad, I know how they feel and I know what makes them scream at each other until they just can't scream any more."

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Love Handles: Couples in Crisis is produced by 495 Productions, with Salsano and Joel Zimmer serving as executive producers. Rob Sharenow, Gena McCarthy and Kimberly Chessler of Lifetime Television also executive produce.

A Long Island native, Salsano started her career in New York City as an intern at The Howard Stern Show and Sally Jesse Raphael, eventually spending five years on Sally as she worked her way up to the role of producer. After Salsano relocated to Los Angeles, she produced the game shows Who Knows the Band, To Tell the Truth and The Blame Game. Prior to launching 495 in 2006, Salsano produced ABC's The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Trista & Ryan's Wedding, Extreme Makeover: Wedding Edition, as well as Fox's Surprise Weddings.
