"Grimm"
review by Suzanne
Fridays 9/8 c on NBC
Grimm is about a young man named Nick, who finds out from his
aunt that evil creatures like werewolves really exist, and that their family has
been hunting them for generations (like Buffy the Vampire Slayer). She only
tells him this because she's dying of cancer, and he has to learn all the family
secrets. However, she is attacked before she tells him much, and she ends up in
a coma. Now Nick is left to figure things out on his own. He met a werewolf
named Monroe, who fills him in about his kind (called Blutbaden), and that not
all of them are bad guys. In the first episode, Monroe helped Nick track down an
evil Blutbaden that has kidnapped a little girl and plans to eat her.
Nick can see some of the evil creatures, even though regular humans can't. He
keeps seeing this one blonde woman (Claire Coffee), who tries to kill his aunt,
but he fends her off. There is a lot of mystery here for us to learn about.
I enjoyed the first episode, and it will be interesting to see what other
creatures are there for Nick to discover. My only objection to the show is that
it is very "real world" other than the creatures. It is visually dark, which I
don't like. I hate having to squint to see things moving in the dark on my TV.
I will try not to hold it against the show, though.
The acting is very good, and I thought the story was very
unusual. It really isn't like anything else on TV right now, even though it is
tempting to compare it to "Once Upon a Time", which is also about "fairy tales".
The two shows are very different, though. I just hope NBC gives it a chance.
