Primetime Show Reviews
"Neighbors from Hell"
season premiere by Suzanne
Airing on TBS Mondays starting June 7.
I've watched the first episode of this show, and I enjoyed it.
That is a rare treat nowadays, especially when it comes to sitcoms or cable
cartoons. I liked the characters, and I chuckled throughout, and I laughed out
loud quite a few times. That is the most important thing for any comedy -
to make you laugh!
The basic premise is that a family that lives in Hell is sent by
Satan to live on Earth and stop a big drill that is going to drill into the
center of the earth (where Hell is). The main character, Balthazor Hellman
(love that name!) is given this task because he was caught sneaking off to watch
TV - something that is forbidden in Hell (except to use as torture).
It's a clever, cute, fun show. People of all ages should enjoy
it. It has lots of silliness for kids to enjoy, and very clever funny stuff for
adults. There have been MANY shows like this, dating all the way back to "My
Favorite Martian" - aliens or other weird beings hide out in the suburbs.
In this case, it's a whole family. That makes it similar to shows like The
Addams Family, Hi Honey I'm Home, and Aliens in the Family. Some have been
good, some were not. Neighbors from Hell is a good one, so I hope it succeeds.
If you are not too uptight or religious to enjoy a comedy about
Hell-demons, then check it out!

TBS Ready to Set Summer on Fire with
Original Primetime Animated Series NEIGHBORS FROM HELL
Series from Producers of South Park and Madagascar to
Premiere June 7 at 10 p.m.
TBS will turn the heat up this summer with the
network’s first original primetime animated series NEIGHBORS FROM HELL,
from Fox TV Animation, MoonBoy Animation and producers from South
Park and Madagascar. Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live),
Will Sasso (MADtv) and Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille)
provide voices for the hilarious adventures of the devilish Hellman
family. NEIGHBORS FROM HELL is slated to surface on TBS Monday, June 7,
at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
At first look, the Hellmans seem like a typical,
all-American suburban family, with Balthazor (Sasso); his wife, Tina
(Shannon); their two children, Mandy (Tracey Fairaway) and Josh (David Soren);
their dog, Pazuzu (Oswalt); and Uncle Vlaartark (Kyle McCulloch). As it
turns out, the Hellmans happen to be from Hell. They have been sent to Earth
by Satan with a mission to prevent humans from drilling into their home in
the underworld. To complete their mission, they must pose as average,
everyday suburbanites. They soon discover that, when it comes to devilish
behavior, humans are giving Hell a run for its money.
Making the Hellmans’ task all the more complicated is
Balthazor’s congenial affection for humans and their odd but endearing
qualities, including his politically incorrect boss Kilbride (Kurtwood Smith
– That ‘70s Show) and his Turkish coworker Chevdet (Kyle McCulloch). Balthazor
also admires humans’ sense of responsibility toward loved ones and tries to
emulate that with his own family.
Tina is not as enamored of the family’s assignment. Having
to spend time dealing with suburban housewives, like their intrusive
neighbor Marjoe (Dina Waters – Just Like Heaven), isn’t exactly
Tina’s idea of fun. But she does love a good stiff drink.
Josh and Mandy are typical teenagers in Hell, which makes it
fairly easy for them to adapt to life on the surface. Uncle Vlartaark spends
much of his time trying to satisfy his bizarre appetites. And while Pazuzu
is the real brains in the family, he frequently has to play the role of the
