Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy"
review by Suzanne
Premieres Monday, February 21 on Lifetime at 9pm et/pt
I had never heard of this case, so it was all new to me.
Apparently it was a big deal all over the news for a while. A young woman,
Amanda Knox, was accused of murdering her roommate while in a college program
abroad in Italy. The whole thing is very sad and sordid.
This movie stars Hayden Panettiere and Marcia Gay Harden, who both are excellent
in the movie. The movie shows mostly the facts of how the police investigated
and what happened in the trial. They don't show the murder. They don't really
pick sides or tell us whether Amanda was guilty or not (although Hayden is
definitely star as Amanda). A lot of the movie is from the point of view or
either Amanda, or her parents, or the prosecutor Mignini. I would say, in some
ways, they are more on the side of Mignini, but only very slightly.
The facts they show do make Amanda look a bit odd and suspicious, but they also
make it seem that the police did not have much forensic evidence, and that what
they did have may have been contaminated. It is made clear that they didn't have
too much of a case against Amanda or the other two guys that went on trial. They
really didn't give much of a motive for the killing, either. For me, it
certainly does seem reasonable that they got the wrong girl, or at least, the
police did not have enough evidence and may have acted improperly. It looks
clear to me that many people lied here, and that at least one of the people they
convicted may be innocent. It's just hard to know who.
The lack of taking a stand or even showing who else might have done it makes the
movie a little hard to enjoy. I can't say
it really shines any light on anything. If you watched the original news
reports, you probably know everything that was in the movie. The performances
were good, and the writing was good as far as it went, but it is a bit
disappointing. It will be interesting to see what happens with the real life
case (I don't want to tell the ending and ruin it for you). Maybe they'll make a
sequel if it changes things with Amanda.
Here's an all new video for Lifetime's Original Movie
Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, starring Hayden Panettiere and
Marcia Gay Harden, premiering Monday, February 21 at 9/8c!
About Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy
Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy poses the question of whether Knox
(Hayden Panettiere), the Seattle honors student accused of murdering her
college roommate Meredith Kercher (Amanda Fernando Stevens) in 2007 with
her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito (Paolo Romio) and acquaintance Rudy Guede
(Djirbi Kebe), actually committed the crime or was herself a victim.
Referred to as "Foxy Knoxy" by her Italian prosecutor, Guiliani Mignini
(Vincent Riotta), and the press, Knox was painted as an oversexed,
remorseless killer during her two-year trial leading up to her conviction
and subsequent sentencing to 26 years in jail. Marcia Gay Harden portrays
Amanda's mother, Edda Mellas.
The Original Movie will be followed by Lifetime's hour-long documentary
Beyond the Headlines: Amanda Knox, featuring Amanda's mother, father,
friends, investigators, prosecutors and legal scholars who take viewers
inside the Italian justice system and reveal what it's like to be a
foreigner locked up and convicted in another country. Set in the town of
Perugia, Italy, and Amanda's hometown of Seattle, the documentary will
unravel the legal evidence and allegations to look at what really happened
to Meredith Kercher on November 2, 2007 - and what Amanda Knox's role
might have been.
