"The Middle" Season
Premiere Review by Suzanne
Airing Wednesdays on ABC at 8:30pm/7:30c
Of all of the new half-hour comedies I've watched this season,
this is the only one that has made me really laugh, and not just in embarassment.
I smiled, I chuckled, I laughed, and I laughed out loud.
It kind of reminds me of Malcolm in the Middle, but it's not as bizarre or
unrealistic as that show. It's not as farcical. It's very good, though, and
funny, and I enjoyed it.
The show is about a stressed-out mom in Indiana ("the middle of America"). She
has a nice, likable husband, three kids, and a job. The mom narrates the show. I
don't know if it helps to be a woman to enjoy the show or not. I'm not a mom,
yet I could still indentify with her and the other characters.
Patricia Heaton from "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Back to You" stars as the
mom. I didn't like the first show (I know it was funny, but I found most of the
characters too abrasive for my tastes), and the second one was okay but didn't
last long. I hope this one lasts longer because it's a rarity on TV nowadays - a
good old-fashioned sitcom that is actually funny.
The other thing I like about this show is that they use real kids who look like
real kids. The littlest one, Brick, reminds me a lot of the youngest kid from
"Malcolm in the Middle", actually. The girl is the best because when is the last
time you saw a teenage girl on TV who was not beautiful? She is just
normal-looking. They did a good job with casting.
Now they just have to get the word out about this show, so that people know it's
not like all the other stupid sitcoms out there. I know everyone has been raving
about "Parks & Recreation" and "Community" and "Modern Family", but frankly I
don't find those as funny as this one.
