on Purpose" Series Premiere

This is a cute and enjoyable show. It could certainly be
funnier. I chuckled a few times. It is a bit predictable. I hope it will
get better. It did also tug at my heart strings toward the end.
This stars Jenna Elfman as a 37-year-old movie reviewer, Billie,
who just broke up with her boyfriend because he wouldn't get married. She has a
one-night-stand with a guy in his 20's, then they go back for more and she ends
up pregnant. She decides to keep the baby (she does, after all, want a
family, which is why she broke up with her boyfriend) and ends up asking the guy
to live with her because he sleeps in his van.
Jenna Elfman is very funny, but the show needs more than just
her to make me laugh a lot. This is no "Dharma & Greg", which was a very
funny show with a seasoned cast and tons of great jokes. The actress who
plays her best friend, Jenna (Ashley Jensen) is basically playing the same
character she played on "Ugly Betty", but with lines that are not as funny.
That's a shame because they are both very good actresses and deserve better.
Grant Show plays the ex-boyfriend who still loves her and is also Billie and
Jenna's boss. The other actors are new to me, but they seem fine. Jon
Foster plays Zack, the father of the baby. Lennon Parham plays Abby,
Billie's sister, and Nicolas Wright plays Davis, Zack's friend.
It's pretty much your standard situation comedy, which is fine,
but it needs to be funnier or why bother tuning it? That's what sitcoms are
supposed to do - make you laugh. It has stiff competition up against House
and Heroes. However, it is sandwiched between two fairly popular and
funnier comedies, "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men".
