"Til Death" Review by Danielle 9/11/06

Til Death is a new Fox comedy starring Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher as an older couple who has been married for several years. The comparison is made between them as Eddie and Joy Stamm and a new young newlywed couple, Jeff and Steph Woodcock played by Eddie Kaye Thomas and Kat Foster, who moves in next door. Brad Garrett is once again cast as the sad sack much like his character Robert on ‘Everybody Loves Raymond.” Jeff Woodcock has moved to the neighborhood to start working as the new vice principal at the same school that Eddie teaches in. Eddie tries to impart his experience and knowledge about married life on Jeff and Jeff, still naďve in his beliefs about marriage tries to prove him wrong. This particular instance involved the Jeff wanting a pool table but in the end found that Eddie was right when he predicted exactly the way Steph would change her mind after originally agreeing to the pool table.

With two such well-seasoned actors in the lead roles, this sitcom had great promise. While the comparisons between the couples were stereo-typically right on, the show lacked the laugh out loud humor one might expect of such a premise. The jokes were mostly mediocre at best. The one highlight was the constant referencing to Joely Fisher’s (formerly of the sitcom ‘Ellen’) stopping everything to watch Ellen Degeneres’ new talk show. Hopefully in time, the storyline will have a chance to develop into something deeper than Eddie imparting the mantra of “wives kill all the fun.”
