Primetime Show Reviews

"Center of the Universe" Review by Eva 10/30/04

Center of the Universe cast picture from CBS.comI was really looking forward to this show since the commercials I saw for it looked so funny. It was strange that CBS kept postponing the premiere of the show because they wanted to promote its newest show in the CSI franchise, CSI New York.

The show revolves around John Barnett, who is the owner of a security firm. John and his wife Kate have been married for 20 years and are still very much in love. It sounds like a typical sitcom right, but there is a twist.  John's parents Art and Marge are played by Emmy winner Ed Asner and Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis.  They constantly keep asking their son John to solve their problems, and so does his brother, Tommy, played by Diedrich Bader, and sister, Lily, played by Melinda Macgraw.

John is often so busy solving his family's problems that he has no time to handle the problems that might arise with his wife, and son Miles (played by Spencer Breslin). To give you an idea of the problems John handles for his family, in the first episode John's father, Art, who is obsessed with sex, is taking some little pills from a foreign country, which his gardener gave him to make him more active. John's mother, Marge, begs him to have a talk with his father because she can't handle him anymore. John's recently divorced sister, whose husband left her for another woman, is very depressed and constantly comes over to talk with him. John's brother, Tommy, is irresponsible and never goes to work at the security firm, so John basically pays him to do nothing.   These problems almost force John and his wife to cancel the ceremony where they want to renew their wedding vows.

The show has a great cast, and while I didn't start laughing hard until the middle of the show, it  is funny.  However, it still needs work on thewriting to make it worthy of its stellar cast. I don't recommend it for small children at all because of Ed Asner's character constant talking about sex. I also think that the show is in the perfect time slot, and given it doesn't have too much competition on Wednesday nights, it should do well for CBS. I do think, however ,that if CBS does decide to move the show, it will suffer against any strong competition from the other networks.

On a scale from 1 to 5, I give the show a 3. Center of the Universe airs on Wednesday nights at 9:30 ET 8:30 central.
