Interview with Taylor Hickson of "Deadly
Class" on
Syfy 3/25/19
I interviewed Tom Stevens last month,
so Syfy asked if I would be interested in doing another
interview. Time was short, so they suggested an email
interview. I was happy to do that!
1. How did the audition for your role come about?
I believe I got a self tape for Brandy, actually,
and following that, received a self tape for Petra. I
was booked off of that one tape. Which was nothing like
the broody character you see today.
2. Had you read the comic book before taking role?
I had not! I was only introduced following booking
the role.
3. Are you a comic book fan in general?
I read Archie and Spiderman growing up, but my
knowledge to the world of graphic novels/comics was
fairly limited until Deadly Class.
4. Did they tell you ahead of time how it would end?
If not, when did you find out about what happens in the
last few episodes?
We were always kept on our toes. We got the
scripts generally one at a time, a week or so before
we'd shoot the content. We would ask questions, and we
were wary, but we were always observing how closely the
story arc was sticking to the comics.
6. It seems like Petra didn't see as much action as the
other students. Did you wish you had done more fight
scenes?
To
some extent yes, though exhausting. Petra is more brain
than brawn, and that's actually something that I've
admired about her that sets her apart from some of the
other students. She plans beforehand. She's a
strategizer, and thinks quickly on her feet. I think it
makes her interesting, but that's not to say she can't
whoop ass when she needs to.
7. You remind me a little bit of Willow in "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer," in the early years. I hope you don't go
dark on us! Have you seen that show?
I actually have! My grandma owned the entire box
set when we were little and it was always playing as it
was her favourite. No promises though, murder school and
all that.
8. Did you know much about the 1980's, or the music from
that era, before you did this show?
The show takes place in 1987, which my Mom
would've been 17, as I am in the show. So yes, I have
fair knowledge about 80's pop from my Mom, and 80's
rock/punk from my Dad. My mom also kept a lot of her
clothes from then, which I wore growing up and even
today. In high school, I listened to a lot of
The Smiths and
The Cure. Yes, I had an emo phase too.
9. What would you like to see happen to Petra in Season
2?
I want to see her grow in her abilities, as well
as see her connection with Billy blossom. It's something
that didn't exist in the comics, so I'm unsure of what
to expect out of their relationship. Very curious!
10. Do you have any other projects you're working on,
or coming out, that you can tell us about?
I have a feature film, "Giant Little Ones" written
and directed by Keith Behrman, playing in theatre's in
USA and Vancouver/Toronto currently, and it comes to
theatres for the rest of Canada March 29th! I also start
prep for my other tv series, "Motherland" produced by
Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay on April
1st.
