Getting to Know Sean Kanan (Deacon)
Longtime General Hospital fans remember Sean Kanan as the first grown-up
version of AJ Quartermaine in Port Charles. The actor remained in the role
until 1997. Kanan's next soap role was on the short-lived Sunset Beach (Jude).
In 2000, Kanan landed on "The Bold and the Beautiful" as the dastardly Deacon
Sharpe. He stayed with the soap until 2005. In 2009, Deacon and Kanan were
brought to Genoa City to stir things up.
The handsome and gracious Kanan sat down for an interview with me last
month. We talked about General Hospital, Y&R, and lots of things in between.
Q: Talk about your first big acting break, "Karate Kid 3,” did you have a
big role in the film? You also have a martial arts background?
Sean Kanan: Yes, I was the lead bad guy in the film. I've studied various
martial arts off and on since I was 13. It's something that's very near and
dear to me, and it had a profound impact on my life.
Q: You do some stand-up comedy shows. Iis comedy one of your passions?
Sean Kanan: I love to make people laugh. I love to laugh at myself.
Q: Talk a little bit about doing "Dancing with the Stars" in Italy.
Sean Kanan: I lasted about nine weeks and it is one of the most painful things I've ever done. I got more banged up and hurt learning how to dance than I
ever did doing anything else. It was a great experience. I was a "nothing"
dancer before. I really needed to learn how to dance. It's difficult, but it
Q: You left The Bold and the Beautiful in 2005. Was it difficult returning
to daytime TV in 2009 after your absence?
Sean Kanan: Going back through the gate at CBS was an incredible feeling.
It was really amazing. It was difficult because my character was being written
in a different way.
Q: Talk about working with Melody Thomas Scott.
Sean Kanan: Melody is a real lady. She's a very kind, warm, elegant lady.
I really enjoy working with Melody. I remember when I started out in daytime.
I remember I said to myself, "if I ever get the chance to work with Eric Braeden
and Melody Thomas Scott, it would mean I had reached … a milestone."
Q: You've been a part of two very popular CBS soaps. How does that feel?
Sean Kanan: It was quite an honor to be a part of the (B&B) cast. I always
wanted to be on "The Young and the Restless." It's pretty cool to be a part of
the number one show on daytime.
Watch for Sean Kanan on "The Young and the Restless" weekdays on CBS.
Sean's book "The Modern Gentleman" is available on Amazon.
