Unwilling Love

When Kristen Blake caught John's eye, she had just come to Salem and was working as a social worker with children in Salem University Hospital. John was still trying to fight his returned feelings of passion for his former wife, Marlena. But when he saw Kristen, she became the new object of his desire. Unfortunately, Kristen played hard to get because she had been raised by Stefano DiMera and taught to hate John Black as an enemy. After her attraction could no longer be denied, she decided to find out if John was really that bad, and discovered that she was truly and madly in love with him. This was a problem, though, as she was betrothed to her adopted brother Tony DiMera.

Passionate Abandonment

Matchmaker Alice Horton arranged to have John and Kristen end up together for a weekend at the Horton Cabin on Smith Island. It was there that they finally gave in to their feelings and had a passionate affair. The attraction was completely undeniable and they ravaged one another. John was so happy that he had finally found someone to fill the void the death of wife Isabella had left in his heart. It seemed to be a match made in heaven.

Kristen's Betrothal

Being raised by Stefano DiMera, it was always expected that Kristen would marry her adopted brother Tony DiMera. She did love Tony, although not in the same way she loved John. But when Tony came to claim his bride, Kristen could not deny Stefano's dying wish, and she and Tony be married. As much as it broke her heart, Kristen rejected John and took her place beside Tony at the altar. Stefano knew that a marriage may not be enough to keep them together, so to ensure their union he staged his own death and make it look as though John was responsible. Kristen was outraged and rushed to say her "I Do's" to Tony.

Reunited

John was later acquitted of any wrong-doing in Stefano's supposed death. Kristen's marriage was not going well as she began to see a dark and jealous side of her husband. Tony suspected that her heart was not his. Afraid of having a child with Tony, Kristen went against her religion and got on the birth control pill. When Tony found out, he replaced them with placebos, knowing that a child would create a strong hold on Kristen. She discovered the deception and much to John's delight, left Tony and moved in with him. They began to plan their life together, and after restraining themselves for so long, they made love.

God Intervenes

As the divorce papers were nearly finalized, Stefano rose from the grave to bring John and Kristen a fact that again tore them apart - John was a priest! Kristen, being the religious person that she was, knew that this was the one thing that could keep them apart. She went back to her husband Tony despite John's pleadings to be patient, telling her that he would be released from his vows. After all, he had been married and had a child, and didn't remember his former life.

John on trial for Tony's murder

Tony happily took his wife back, but had learned that he was dying of an incurable disease. He planned an elaborate suicide designed to frame John for his murder and destroy him (again) in Kristen's eyes. His plot worked, and John was put on trial. Kristen made conjugal visits, but having such a strong sense of integrity, she felt that she couldn't lie about her doubts of John's innocence on the stand. It was this testimony that convicted him and sent him to the gas chamber. John was crushed by Kristen's words and couldn't believe she thought him capable of murder.

John loves two women

While John was waiting to die, he had an epiphany and realized that he still loved Marlena, even though they had both loved others. At the last minute, evidence was found that set John free, but now he had to choose who he really wanted to be with. Tony was dead and now he and Kristen could finally be together, but his feelings for Marlena were ever-present. John reluctantly decided to stay with Kristen but was having a hard time forgiving her for her doubts. But she was determined that their love would continue, and she soon became pregnant with his child. John and Kristen were then engaged.  She found a letter that  changed everything. She knew John's true feelings for Marlena but would not surrender the man she loved to any woman.  She vowed to fight to keep him at every cost.

Truth Revealed

Just when Kristen thought she finally had it all - the man she loved, and a child of her own - the tables were turned on her by her own doppelganger Susan. A desperate Kristen had schemed and lied to be able to keep the man she loved, but in the end it was in vain because once he learned the truth about her character, he left her. She did everything she could to keep John and to destroy Marlena (even going so far as to trap Marlena in the cellar, with Stefano's help).  In the end her machinations involving Susan proved to be her undoing.  She was kidnapped by white slavers (that she had paid to take Susan).
