1998: A YEAR TO REMEMBER

1998 was surely a year to remember. There Were lots of Surprise's, Laughter, and Tears - 98 was a great year.
KRISTAN/SUSAN/EDMUND/LAURA
This story line was short-lived, but was my Favorite! Susan meets Edmund in England where she and Elvis are hiding from Stefano, who is trying to get Elvis, his son, away from his "unstable" mother and give him to Kristan to raise. Kristan finds out where Susan and Elvis are hiding and unleashes a plan to get him back. She kidnaps Sister Mary Moira, Susans's twin sister, and phones Susan, telling her that Mary Moira will die unless Susan brings Elvis to her immediately. Susan comes to Salem, empty-handed.
Meanwhile, Kristan hires a turbaned man to kidnap Susan and take her to a Sultan's harem. She also drugs a can of soda for Susan to drink, while drinking a lot herself. Susan comes to the house, drinks the soda, but still manages to hold a letter opener to Kristan's throat. Susan eventually goes out of the house and is found at the airport by Abe and Roman.
Later on, Marlena and John are shocked to discover Kristan's dead body floating in the swimming pool. Susan becomes the main suspect in the case because of the letter opener, which had Susan's fingerprints covering it. But the coroner soon ruled Kristan's death a suicide because of the amount of drugs and alcohol in her system and the lack of signs of a struggle. John feels guilty about this because of some terrible things he had said to her.
It is soon revealed that Susan is Kristan in disguise! The real Susan is held captive by Sultan as planned! This leaves not one, but two questions: if Susan and Kristan are both alive, who was the woman killed in the pool and who was the killer?
Edmund prepossess to "Susan" and she has no choice but to accept. Edmund throws a surprise wedding for "Susan" and the two get married. She keeps up this charade while the real Susan is working on trying to escape from the Sultan.
Laura is later made a suspect in this case. She not only had been angry with Kristan for playing a part in her daughter's death (which turned out the be faked anyway), but she had left her daughter's funeral that night to go find Kristan. Also, Laura's prescription bottle was found at Kristen's house, which turned out to be for the same drugs which were found in Kristan's system that night. Celeste also has had flashbacks about the night that Kristan is killed and worries that she might have done it.
Abe feels he has enough evidence to arrest Laura, but does not when Laura gets into a car accident. Laura admits that she fired the gun at Kristan, but missed. Later, Celeste's blood was found on a bullet that came from a gun that was found in the river. Celeste says that Kristan was still alive after Laura shot her. The judge still sentences Laura to the sanitarium. When Edmund discovered "Susan" hugging Stefano, he confesses that he killed Kristan by accident. Alarmed, "Susan" dumps Edmund.
While this is going on, Susan manages to escape from her captors and goes to Violet's house to find out that "Susan" and Edmund are on their honeymoon in Bermuda. There, she tells Edmund that the woman he is with is indeed Kristan. The two tie up Kristan and Susan impersonates her when Stefano, who knew of Kristan's disguise, calls. She promises to keep in touch and then she whisks Kristan off to the fortress she had been. Kristan was to stay forever there. Susan and Edmund marry on John's plane and the two are living happily in England.
It is also revealed that the woman in the swimming pool was Susan's long lost sister, Penelope Kent. She went with Susan to Salem that night. She happened to be a dead-ringer for Kristan and it was her that was accidentally killed that night, instead of
Kristan.

The Door Remains Open as Cast and Crew say
say Goodbye to Davidson

In addition, the production staff put together a clip montage with a musical background, showcasing Davidson's work during her stay in Salem. It started with her first scene, in which she was saved by John from knife-welding muggers. It also highlighted other moments, such as her wearing a baseball uniform; her life with Tony; wearing her teddy in John's jail cell; stripping for him in the wine cellar ( to which Davidson responded jokingly, "We're tired of this!' ); The Susan saga from the beginning of Kristen's pregnancy to delivery; the Presley-style wedding with Susan's teeth flying; some scenes with Thomas and Penelope; and finally Susan and Edmund's English countryside picnic.
Cast members present for the event included Josh Taylor ( Roman ), Christie Clark ( Carrie ), Collin O'Donnell ( Shawn Douglas ), Kevin Spirtas ( Craig ), Deidre Hall ( Marlena ), Lisa Williams ( Davidson's double ), Roark Critchlow ( Mike ), Krista Allen ( Billie ), and Drake Hogestyn ( John ).
"After today," said Corday, "the cast is 40 percent lighter. Eileen did the most amazing job, and everyone knows it." Later, he praised the actress with the words: "We would never have done it without you. The door is always open for you to return."
Davidson reminisced about her stay and gave special mention to Lisa Williams, her double. She ended by saying, "This has been the most fulfilling experience of my life. I'm so thankful for this wonderful, loving and safe environment you've all given me. You are all as much in my heart as I am in your debt."
