Thumbs Down - Get Rid of the Ghosts!
October 6,
2006
For years, and years, and years, I’ve watched
The Young and the Restless because it dealt so closely to real life.
All the drama, all the action, no matter what it was, was something
that can happen in real life. I felt like I could almost relate to
the show. This past year however, has been a different story. We are
once again being succumbed to watching yet another plot driven
storyline; John Abbott’s ghost, haunting Jack.
At first, I was okay with the idea of toying
with Jack seeing his father, but that was only because I thought
John was being written in as Jack’s conscience and not an actual
spirit. Well, I regret to say that today’s show confirms that John
is indeed haunting Jack. John made the elevator shake, changed the
lighting in the room and then when Victor came to see Jack, Zapato
(Victor’s dog) started barking at John as if he could see him. I’m
sorry Lynn Marie Latham and the rest of the writing staff but this
is unacceptable for daytime’s number one rated show.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for morals, (which
most characters seem to have lost over the last few months) but I’d
really much rather have Jack figure out what he’s doing and change
it on his own rather then having a spirit enter the show. This is
opening the doors to untouched territory on the show and I thought
we’ve already witnessed what’s happened to dramatic serials that go
down this path: They lose ratings and or get cancelled!
Now this confirmation (if you will) of John’s
spirit comes just one week after Latham fired Jack Smith and
expressed interest in wiping out the entire old writing team in
favour of her own one. I’m aware that the storylines are written
well in advance and Jack Smith’s name was credited in this episode,
however I’m starting to wonder if Lynn is planning on taking the
show further down the path of spirituality. It might sound like I’m
over exaggerating to you; one episode and I’m getting all worried,
but I can’t help but remember the fortune teller, Cassie’s spirit,
bad weather striking at the most coincidental times (fog – Brad and
Sharon sleep together, Lightning – Phyllis jumps into Nick’s arms on
plane) and Terrible Tom’s ghost waking up for a scene.
It just seems that as the months go by we
witness more and more of this spiritual/weird stuff on the show. I
just hope for the show’s sake, it doesn’t get out of control. I do
not, and will never like any storyline pertaining to ghosts. There
are plenty of other shows that feature that already.
On a side note, I’d like to give a thumbs up
for today’s scene with Sharon and Phyllis. It was comical and
entertaining, something the show needs more of.
