Coincidences – Far Too Common Lately
June 26, 2006
What is a coincidence to you? Is it not something that happens unexpectedly and not very often? Well
lately on The Young and the Restless, coincidences seem to happen all
the time to help push storylines into new directions. Frankly, I find
it a very uncreative way for the writers to use coincidences to move
along storylines, and I have once again been unimpressed.
You may not have been aware of
just how many coincidences we’ve seen lately on Y&R. Well lets go back
a few months. Do you remember the “Lily and her father’s paternity”
storyline? Well, to bring the whole thing about, the writers had Lily
walk up to Dru’s office at the exact moment Dru and Phyllis were
engaging in an argument in which Phyllis blurted out that Malcolm was
Lily’s father. Coincidence? Yes. Then afterwards to further
extrapolate problems, Lily then sends an email that was meant for
Daniel which also contained the paternity information, over to Neil. Thus ending that storyline.
Not convinced? How about this
seemingly sporadic, unpredictable weather the residents of Genoa City
are having when they go on business trips. Lets go back to winter with
the Nick and Phyllis affair. Yes, that’s right; Nick and Phyllis were
driving on the highway when a terrible snowstorm hit forcing them to
get a room at the nearest motel and eventually end up sleeping
together. Was that not also the day of Nick and Sharon’s anniversary? Indeed it was, and what a coincidence. More recently, when Brad was
flying to Boston, “thick fog” hit and his flight was redirected to New
York. He was then escorted to a hotel in New York, yes in a city of
New York’s size; the exact same hotel Sharon was staying at who also
happened to be on a business trip at the same time. Then to further
add to the coincidences, we have a hotel deliveryman open Sharon’s
door at the same moment Brad walks by. They then see each other and
end up having an affair. My, my, what coincidences.
Still find yourself able to
justify these coincidences. Perhaps you might call it fate? Well that
may be, but there sure is a lot of “fate” going around Genoa City
these days. On top of what I already mentioned we have the new
coffeehouse girl, Jana, who mysteriously knows about Kevin’s past and
his family. We also have Jack, who just happened to be the only one to
notice that something is wrong with Victor, and then there’s also
Jill, who of all the people to meet online, she met Will who is also
seeing Ashley.
I can’t speak for others but I
am unsatisfied with so many coincidences floating around Genoa City. Every time I see one of these quirky coincidences, I’m forced to think
that the writing is just not as creative as it used to be. I am happy
with the reintroduction to rivalries like Jack/Victor and Ashley/Nikki
but I’m just not happy with some of the ways the writers have used to
get the stories to where they are.
