Opening Credits – Update was Long Overdue!
June 9, 2006
It’s been well over two years since The Young
and the Restless decided to update the cast in it’s opening sequence.
It’s about time that the newer actors get the credit they deserve, and
it’s about time the audience gets some new reels to look at. Y&R gets
a thumbs up for the updates, however there were a few things that I
thought they could’ve done better.
It was great to see some new faces in the
credits but I thought they could’ve completely redone the reels,
updating the faces of the actors who were already on the previous
credits rather then just mixing and matching old and new together.
They did do it for some actors, like Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and
Kevin (Greg Rikaart), but I thought they could’ve updated everyone
seeing as it has been over two years now. Actors do age and I don’t
know about you but I’ve grown tiresome of seeing Victor punch that
punching bag and Christine see herself in that mirror.
I also think that updating the entire reel
would’ve helped it flow a little bit better. I noticed that the new
people added were a little choppy on the transition and their pictures
came in a lot sharper than the others. It really made them standout.
When the new format for the sequence first came
out in 2003, Y&R stated that the new format would make it easier to
update the cast as it changed, however I found that statement to be
completely untrue. Aside from the fact that this is only their second
update in over three years, the sequence contains several overlapping
background affects that (I would think at least) make it difficult to
update. One good example is the constant, repetitive, overlapping
“drawing” of the Y&R logo throughout the credits. I found it to be
rather choppy in its continuation from a regular cast member
overlapping to a new added one. This once again further backs my point
that completely redoing the reels would’ve been a better option.
All in all though, I have been pleasantly
surprised by the recent cast updates. I think it is important that
they do these updates more frequently in the future. It’s only fair to
the viewers and the actors that we get to see an up to date sequence
that best represents the current cast. I’m glad that they kept the
classic song and the actor’s name. It just adds to the high standard
quality that makes Y&R the number one show on daytime television.
