JM's Opinion
Lynn Marie Latham – Unimpressed Thus Far
June 2, 2006
Since the somewhat shocking switch of head writers at Y&R, the show has gone
downhill in my opinion. Lynn Marie Latham, who previously wrote most notably for
Port Charles and Knot’s Landing, has taken away the once witty characters of
Genoa City and turned them into a bunch of baked potatoes.
There is just too much drama going on right now,
and it’s from one dumb decision by a character after another. Take
Lily for example, after years of buildup, Neil ends up finding out
that he is not Lily’s father by an ‘accidental’ email Lily sent. She
just accidentally clicked on Neil’s email address, didn’t notice it
and sent it away. Of all times to do this, it happened to be the time
that she decided to type in such delicate information to Daniel? Give
me a break.
How about Brad’s recent storyline? He constantly
tells Nicholas that he doesn’t treat Sharon right, and that he should
be honoring his wedding vows and on and on. Yet, from a pretty
questionable coincidence on the writers part, (thick fog, Brad then
gets shipped to the exact hotel Sharon’s at and Sharon happens to see
him walk by at the split second the waiter opens the door!) Brad ends
up sleeping with Sharon in New York. What a hypocrite. He’s not even
married two weeks and Latham already has him cheating on Victoria. Not
to mention Victor is finally (or so we think for now at least)
accepting Brad, making him a board member and this is how Brad repays
them? C’mon that’s a lame excuse by Latham and the writing team to
create drama.
These are just two prime examples of many that
show the poor quality of writing on Y&R lately. I realize that this is
a soap opera and soaps need drama, but Y&R always stood out from the
rest for its intelligently written drama. Drama that was character
driven opposed to plot driven. Sure characters make mistakes, but not
like they have lately. Most likely many others and I enjoyed watching
because we felt like we could relate to these characters. The trials
and tribulations that happened to them seemed to ‘just happen,’
whereas now it seems like every problem is too obviously just ‘made to
happen’. Nobody is happy, everyone is in complete chaos, and it’s just
way too overdramatic.
To be fair, Latham has only been head writer for
3 months now, and a lot of her storylines have been wrap-ups from Jack
Smith, but I have been unimpressed with her work so far. She needs to
tone down the drama and get back to the Y&R basics that made it the
number 1 show in daytime. Instead of planning her storylines a year in
advance, she should let the on screen chemistry dictate the direction.
Y&R is not all about doom and gloom; it’s about deep characters,
strong family ties, smart business storylines and good mysteries.
