Candy Cane

Fans of Y&R were treated to some eye candy in 2007-- a bartender in the
restaurant that was then called "Indigo." We watched him flirt with
several women as he served them drinks and charmed them with his adorable
Australian accent.
I never really thought anything would come of this man. I thought he
was basically an extra, a little something special to break up the harsh drama
of other storylines. Then came Amber. She caught his eye and soon
she began showing up at Indigo a lot more often. They had a short but hot
romance, and Amber helped Cane find his birth parents who turned out to be Jill
Abbott and Phillip Chancellor II. Viewers were made to believe Katherine
switched Phillip Chancellor III with another baby at birth. Time and DNA
tests proved otherwise, and we all wondered, "Is Cane a good guy or a con
artist?" The truth came to light and we all breathed a sigh of relief but
Can was alone again after Amber's betrayal.
Who doesn't love a story about forbidden love? It's certainly a
favorite of soap opera lovers, and the story of Cane and Lily didn't disappoint.
In the past, interracial couples were not popular among viewers to an alarming
degree. Kristoff St. John received death threats when Neil's storyline
paired him with Victoria. However, the idea of Cane and Lily giving in to
their feelings for each other seemed to touch the hearts of most viewers.
Cane and Lily weren't forbidden lovers because of their race but because of age,
Cane's past, and let's not forget Cane was Lily's father's ex-employee.
No, we weren't thinking death threats. We were too busy swooning every
time Cane smiled. Each time Lily considered she was making a mistake, we sat
on our couches desperately trying to get through to her.
I have to admit, there was a time I was very frustrated by the writers.
I wanted to like Cane. He was so romantic, so loving...and a big fat liar.
The lies seemed endless; and every time he would come clean with Lily, he would
promise her "no more lies" and then a whole new batch would arrive. As
much as I loved watching Cane and Lily's scenes, it started making me feel like
the writers were making Lily stupid and weak. Suddenly, instead of viewers
rooting for a Cane and Lily romance, the writers were trying to force one down
our throats when we all just wanted to shake some sense into Lily. She
broke up with Daniel because of his porn addiction, but somehow we're supposed to
believe she would continually forgive Cane for countless lies? Thank God
the writers came to their senses, righted the wrongs and Cane is good
again...for now.
Daniel Goddard plays a perfect Cane. I can't imagine someone else
portraying that character. So many characters are recast and it takes a
long time to get used to the change. I hope Daniel Goddard is happy
playing Cane; and if, one day, he is unhappy, I hope the writers of Y&R remove
Cane from the show with an open ending in case Daniel Goddard wants to return.
Whether the character of Cane is a good guy, a guy you love to hate, or a
complete wretch, I will enjoy the eye candy.
I wouldn't mind hanging this Candy Cane from my Christmas tree!
