Shirley's Opinions

By Shirley

8/1/05 - 8/5/05

August is shaping up to be a pretty good month for Passions viewers, and I have to say I am loving it so far. Oh, sure, there are things I'd like to have seen played differently, but all in all I think it's been a great week and a good start to what is supposed to be a turning point period on the show.

The earthquake started in July, of course, but the effects of it carried over into this week, with the tsunami and it's aftermath. While the special effects were pretty cheesy, you have to remember it's only a soap, and they aren't working with the biggest budgets in the world. Overall, however, the story was told and we got the idea of what was happening, and that's what was important.

I'll start with the things I didn't like, then move on to what I did like. First and foremost, we were promised that two people would die in the disaster, and while many of us hoped they would be this or that main character, we pretty much figured it would be someone who wasn't. I have to tell you, I only saw one death, tho. Maureen, the mother that Sheridan made friends with, died, leaving her son to Sheridan, and that's it so far. I am thinking the other will probably be Edna, who everyone will suppose to have died but who really surfed her way to a desert island somewhere and is living as the queen of the mostly male paradise.

I was seriously hoping it would be Spike, Liz, or TC who got swept away to their final reward, but no such luck. Instead they all made it through and immediately started right back on their old pathways again. Liz tried to seduce Julian, who would have nothing to do with her, and finally stabbed him because of it. When Eve and TC found them, she claimed he tried to rape her and she had to stab him to stop him. Eve used logic to show that claim made no sense whatsoever, but TC still took Liz' side. This really bugged me because not five minutes earlier, Harmony time, he had been in a car with Eve, telling her he realizes he still loves her and wants her to come back to him. She gave me a scare at first, thinking she might just go along with it, but when she said something about Liz blaming her for trying to kill her, saying she never did any such thing, TC let her know he still believes Liz. That seems to have stopped any thoughts of reconciling with him, thank God. Leaving Julian, who truly loves her and stands by her no matter what, would be the stupidest things she's ever done, especially if she did it to go back to TC.

Chad and Whitney, trapped in his warm, comfortable studio, with electricity and food no matter what, decided it was the end of the world and made love. Eeeeew!! Gross! Now, I have heard some things that make me confident they will soon find out they really aren't siblings, but for now they are, and it's just too gross for words for them to do that. I don't care what they thought was going to happen, knowingly committing what they believe to be incest is just wrong.

I hated the fact that Alistair sat in his safe, hilltop mansion and forced the scientists not to give Harmony warning of the tsunami that was coming, but it is just what he would do. I hated the fact that Katherine ended up riding a coffin that anyone with a brain knew would be Rachel's, and that it ended up with her falling off it right in front of Pilar's house, then having her claim she didn't know where she was, and Martin claiming he didn't know it was her hollering for help after he rushed out to help her and brought her back to the house. I have to say I did laugh like crazy watching the two of them riding that coffin like a horse, right toward the house and in through the front door, right in front of Pilar. LOL!! That was pretty funny, even tho is was also pretty stupid.

I loved Edna and her "sign from God" - the "You are now leaving Harmony" sign, which she climbed up on and surfed out of town on. I loved Fox and Kay together. I think there is a lot of chemistry there, and it works well on the screen. Besides, I like the idea of her finally having a man to love her, and him finally having a woman who really wants to be with only him. I don't now how long it will last, but I'm sure going to enjoy it while it does. I have to say I still can't get into Noah and Fancy, no matter how hard they try to push them on us. Fancy needs a good whupping, and Noah isn't the one to do it. Sorry, but I still give this couple a big, fat zero in the chemistry and appeal department.

Tabitha and Endora are really loving the chaos they created when their energy beams crossed, at least for the most part. I love the way Tabby seems to be getting softer as the years go on. He attachment to Kay is showing, and of course her love for her daughter is wonderful to see. I just hope someday they get Timmy, Endora, and Angel Girl together and have them work on the old witch, transforming her into a genuinely lovable old lady.

And finally, I have to say I loved seeing Pilar's heart take over where Katherine is concerned. Her empathy with the woman after finding out what she'd put herself in line for in an attempt to shield her daughter was wonderful to watch, and seeing her pull her enemy, the rival for her husband's heart, to her in an embrace as the woman cried almost made me cry. It's hard to say, really, but I think that was probably my favorite scene of the week. Getting the old, loving, big hearted Pilar back has been a long time coming, and I, for one, am loving it. I missed her!

Theresa and Ethan - what can I say? I love them together, but I hate the way he keeps telling her and anyone else who will listen that he really, truly, loves her, not Gwen; that she is his life and he can't live without her; that he wants to be with her, make love to her, etc, more than anything, and yet when it gets right down to it, he says "Oh, no, I may love you best, but I have to stay with my wife." Come on! That's short-changing both women, and it's beneath any male who wants to call them self a real man. Either stay with Gwen and stop running after Theresa and telling her you love her, or leave Gwen and go to the woman you really love. It's that simple. Hopefully it won't be long before he does drop Gwen soon, and I had honestly thought it would happen last month when the truth was supposed to have come out about what they'd done, but now that The Powers That Be have listened to the viewer's voices and decided to give us what we want, maybe it won't be much longer. I certainly hope not. It sounds like the secret will be out before the month is over, but then, we've been down this path before. I'll believe it when I see it, and just keep hoping it happens.

Oh, and Simone is back. She supposedly has a major secret which will be divulged before long, so I'll be waiting to see how they handle that, but having her come back in time to save her friend Jessica was a great thing to have happen. I just hope they give her a really good story. And since Spike wasn't washed away with the rip tide, I hope Simone will be the catalyst to get Jessica out of his clutches before it's too late.

Ok, that's about it. I know there was more, but nothing that really sticks in my mind. I did find the scenes of Gwen rowing while Rebecca whined were somewhat funny, but I'm so past tired of those two it really didn't make that big an impression. As for the rest of it, it is really looking good and I find myself looking forward to seeing what's going to happen next, and that's a strange feeling for this show. At least on this scale it is. The show seems to be moving, and changing, and taking our wants into consideration, and I couldn't be happier. Keep it coming, JER and company. We've held on through the sludge, now give us the payoffs we deserve.
