Shirley's Opinion #87

By Shirley

11/29 - 12/3/04

Was this a creepy, bittersweet week for anyone else?  I mean, watching David Bailey play Alistair all week knowing he had passed away the week before just made everything else pale in comparison.  Don't get me wrong, I am very glad they are going to finish out his acting job, not just drop it like they did to Timmy, but I have to tell you, when Alistair and Julian were talking about what life would be like after Alistair dies and David told him "I'm not dead yet" it gave me a pain like a knife stabbing my heart.  I love David's work as Alistair, finally giving him a face after all these years, and I will truly miss him once his scenes are over, but it is a bittersweet experience under the circumstances.  I am not sure what my feelings are on how Alistair should be played afterwards, though.  I grew so tired of seeing only his back, his hands, or his feet after so many years, but the thought of him being played by anyone else just doesn't sit right.  It's like the new guy playing Uncle Mickey on Days.  He does a good job, but.....he's just not Mickey, you know?

OK, on with the opinions of the show.  This week was a lot of the same-old-same-old, but there were some new things, too, so it wasn't as boring as it could have been.  Theresa was fighting all week to save the baby she was carrying and it looked like she'd made it until Little Sister Paloma came in and gave her the news that Martin Fitzgerald was back in town.  I am still trying to figure out if she was trying to jab at Pilar once again by doing that, but I am sure she never meant to cause problems for her sister or the baby.  I wish Pilar would have acted like her mother and gone to her to let her know it was OK.  You know that girl is wracked with guilt, and as a mother, Pilar should be sensitive to that.  Her first objective should have been to help Paloma get rid of any guilt she might be feeling.  I guess that would be a less dramatic way to go, but it would be more true to life.  I guess I can see her point in calling Martin to tell him about Theresa, but for the life of me, I can't understand why Katherine thought she just had to butt in.  She knows Pilar will be there and her coming would be like rubbing salt in her wounds, yet she refused to do what Martin asked and wait for him and the B&B.  And while Martin seemed to love her for it, I found it rude, uncaring, and totally insensitive to the situation.  Now, true, I can't stand the two of them at all, but I don't think I am letting that influence my belief here.  This family has enough problems right now without having to be reminded of the fact this woman took their husband and father away.  I am tired of Luis constantly being at Martin's throat, though.  There comes a time when you just have to accept the fact the fool is going to be there and just start ignoring him.  And his ordering Sheridan to never speak to Mrs. Wheeler again.....what a chauvinist brat!  He could have asked her not to talk to her for his sake, but to order her not to....that's just too much.   No, he didn't have the right to do that, and he should have kept his mouth shut when his father came in since they were in a hospital, after all.

Theresa finally gave birth to the baby, something like two and 1/2 months early, I think, and it's not doing so well right now.  I don't know if the baby will live or not, or whether it will be Gwen's or Theresa's, but I do know this can be a really good story if they do it right.  Now, I've heard some rumors that make me think either the baby dies or it turns out to be Theresa's after all, but I don't know for sure.  I have no real preference as to which way it goes, either.  I just want good story.  The confrontation at the NICU between the two mothers dressed up and ready to go in looks like it will be a good one.  I am wondering which way Ethan is going to jump, too.  He really can't make up his mind, can he?  It's no wonder those two women are just his side of looneytoons.  I think I'd have him pushing up daisies if I were one of them.  He is frustratingly wishy-washy.

Beth really took it to Alistair this week, didn't she?  I couldn't believe her yelling at him the way she did, but it was a good way to show her frustration at not being able to get Luis away from Sheridan.  I guess Alistair has his own ideas and doesn't want her messing them up, but if that's the case, he should really put her in her place better than he has done.  I am wondering what his scheme is now, what secret he will reveal that will tear Shuis apart.  I think there are only two choices, but I can't figure out which is the most logical.  I figure he can tell them about Katherine, which he has been totally unwilling to do so far, or he can reveal that Antonio is still alive and bring him back.  I prefer the latter way, to tell the truth.  It makes more sense in the scheme of things, it would certainly keep the two love birds apart, and it just seems to make the most sense.

Eve went along with Whitney by telling everyone the baby is Fox's.  Now, isn't that something?  Of course, you knew it had to be that way, it's the only way they could insure the story would continue and build more drama.  I really thought Eve might just go through with her threat and tell the truth, but the thought of her little girl being hurt and treated badly kept her from doing that.  I sure hope Whitney will see just how much she does love her now and give her a chance by treating her with respect again.  I think they way she had talked to and treated her mother is horrible, and I'm ready to see a more respectful relationship between them.  And I'm waiting for the day when Whitney finds out her beloved, sainted Daddy is rolling in the hay with her aunt, too.  Oh, that should be so good!  I hope she finds some choice words for the two of them, as she seemed to never run out of for her mother.  I'm telling you, if she finds out what's going on and starts in with that "Oh, I'm so happy for both of you!" routine, I will literally pull my hair out!  That would be one of the most hypocritical things I can think of, and it would really bug the heck out of me.  She still won't accept Eve with Julian, so she'd better not accept TC with Liz, either.  Speaking of Eve, I hope she and Julian can manage to be happy from here on out.  I hated the way Alistair talked about her this week.  I think it's totally uncalled for, but I can see where it defines the man.  I just hate hearing that kind of talk no matter by whom or where.  However, in contrast, I really did enjoy hearing Julian tell Alistair that there are now going to be three black Cranes, and sooner or later there may be more black ones than white.  LOL!!  Good for you, Julian.  I think both of them played those scenes realistically and just did a superb job, even tho it was a distasteful subject.  And I have to say it's good to see that Julian has finally managed to get under the old man's skin for once.  I guess Alistair's one comeback was to side with Rebecca, but I have to tell you, his remarks were really annoying and made my skin crawl.  I mean, to brag to your son that you've had his wife, even though he doesn't love or want her anymore, is really low and disgusting.  And to brag about having been with this particular woman isn't the smartest move, in my opinion.  I'd be trying to keep that one quiet.  She is such a scuzbag!  She is filthy, vile, rude, conceited, racist, and loose as a goose, so it's not like advertising you are one of ten million served at the Moldy Arches of Rebecca is going to earn you anything but revulsion from those who hear it.  The man really is without even one good point in his defense.  Well, I guess once Julian peels her off his back, she might just as well go after his father.  They deserve each other, I'd say.

Well, that's about all I have to say about the show this week.  It wasn't a bad week, really, but.....there wasn't a whole lot of good to crow about, either.  Just an average week on Passions, really.  We can always hope next week with bring better things, right?  It can't hurt to hope.
