Shirley's Opinion #73
7/19 - 7/23/04
Hokey Smokes, I don't believe it!! Someone check to
see if the sky's falling, because we have seen a modern miracle and
anything could happen now. TC found out about Eve's past!!
Well, most of it. Liz finally got Aunt Irma together with Eve and
the fur started flying! TC seemed bound and determined not to
believe her, and at one point I thought he was going to start knocking her
out of her wheelchair, which I will discuss further in a minute. I
do have to say I was proud of Eve for standing up and finally doing the
right thing by admitting to what she had done. After all this time
of allowing everyone else to pay for her past mistakes, she finally came
clean. I was beginning to think it would never happen, or it would
be some weak-kneed thing like TC's shed, but no, it really came out.
I'm almost speechless.
Now to TC. His reaction was exactly what I thought
it would be. He screeched, yelled, bellowed, and tore the kitchen to
shreds in his anger and pain. Now, we all know that is just what he
would do, but I am still upset about it. I feel they have gone out
of their way to portray him as a man with very little sense, and too much
anger. They also have him on a hair trigger, ready to start beating
people up for the merest thing they do. Maybe I shouldn't feel this
way, but I can't help it, so I'm just going to say it. Why did the
make TC that way, the only black male model for younger people on the
show? I know, I'm probably making too much of this, and I'm sure
they would say "Oh, no, his color never figured into it!",
but.....we know better. Look at what they have done to the
Lopez-Fitzgerald boys. They are almost as bad, and every time
someone remarks on it, it's always their "Latin temper".
Really? So, what....don't white guys have a temper? I've seen
a lot of them who hit first and ask questions later, but not on this show.
No, the white guys are more stolid, more likely to talk it out, make
peace, whatever. Ethan, Fox, even Julian and Alistair. Well,
Alistair has his hired hands to do his dirty work, but still, we don't see
him beating the tar out of people. Sam has flown off the handle once
or twice, but not every time he is crossed, and Hank....well, Hank is
the peacemaker at all times, right? Why the difference?
Chad is a pretty cool guy, but he, too, is ready way to quickly to want to
"kill" someone. The one thing you can say for the writers
is that at least they don't overtly use TC's blackness to explain his
explosiveness, but they might as well. I'm sorry if I have offended
anyone, but it just seems so obvious that if TC were not black he would be
more capable of keeping his hands to himself. I do have to say, Rodney
Van Johnson did a good job of showing the pain TC was in, even through all
So, Charity is finally gone. Can Miguel be far
behind? Oh, Kay is not going to like it, but we already know it's
all over with already. I wonder if they will ever be back, with new
faces? It seems such a waste, after spending all this time,
investing all our time in them, that they just walked away, with no climax
to their angst, and no "The End" to put on the story. I
guess that's what happens when the writers can't figure out what to do
with the characters they have, and instead bring in new characters,
writing for them, and leaving the originals standing around
watching. Too bad. That could have been a far better story
than the one they gave us
Sheridan and Luis have come face-to-face with their
respective parents. And Katherine has admitted to Sheridan that she
is her mother. Yeah, right. Well, it would have been nice, but
of course, the story has to last as long as possible. Maybe even
until these characters give up and leave Harmony, too. Maybe that's
the way the show will end, finally. Everyone just walks away, one by
one, leaving us wondering why we even started to watch in the first place,
with nothing ever resolved. Man, I sure hope not!!
So....does anyone really think Whitney will marry
Chad? I can't believe he is going along with it. Fox, of
course, knows what she'd doing and why, but Chad just thinks he hit the
jackpot. Poor guy. I'm not sure if I feel sorry for Whitney,
too, or if I just wish she'd grow up. She had to have known Fox had
feelings for her, and that she had the same feelings, right? I don't
understand how she can act so self-righteous now. Well, I guess she
could have been fooling herself all along, but she doesn't strike me as
being that unaware. I know, they are trying to show the similarities
between her and Eve, showing that even though she is so upset with her
mother for loving two men, she herself is in the same boat. Still,
it is a bit hard to take. And again, I hope this story doesn't go on
forever. Maybe with the truth about Eve coming out and the truth
about her and Julian surely not too far behind, the truth about Chad's
parentage will come out and put an end to that triangle before it drags on
My last thought is of Ivy. She was pretty stewed
this week, worrying about Eve's secrets coming out and dragging her own
out with them. She really seems to be trying to get herself so drunk
that she won't know when Sam tosses her out on her rear end. I don't
know, maybe it won't happen, but seeing Ivy so vulnerable really is great,
isn't it? She has been so hard and evil for so long it's nice to see
she does have chinks in her armor at last.
Ok, so I'll be back next week to let you know what comes
of this week and what I think about it all. Let's hope that now that
Eve's been outed, the rest of the secrets that have caused so much pain to
the people of Harmony are right there behind them. That's what I'm
hoping for, anyway. See you next week.
