Port Charles’ Town Crier
Sam McCall

On October 1, 2003, Samantha McCall came to our televisions as the stereotypical soap badass loner chick. Now, three years later, Sam has become nothing more than a victimless victim. Frankly, I could care less, since I never liked her from the beginning, but it’s the assassination of this character that I’m calling into question. In the beginning, Sam took no crap. She did what she wanted, which was mostly lying and stealing, yet she was her own woman. She didn’t depend on a man to justify her existence. She didn’t blame her past and/or present conditions on others. She took responsibility for her actions as well as her mistakes. Although, I despised her, she was a character that one could root for. That is…until they gave her a back story. With a back story, she became a misunderstood badass with a heart.

Sam’s character took a nosedive when she lost the baby. On November 8, 2004, Sam became the “victim.” For the next year and half, she blamed everything bad that occurred in her life on Alexis. She was so consumed with hatred towards Alexis that it was beyond pathetic. It was Alexis’ fault that her baby died. It was Alexis’ fault her brother died. In Sam’s eyes Alexis was the antichrist, even when Alexis turned out to be her mother. Sam couldn’t understand how a witch with a b, could be her mother.

Sam gets shot and Jason pushes her away for her own good. Sam whines and cries for the next couple of months to anyone who wants to hear it. Sam then gets drunk and has sex with Ric, her mother’s husband. This encounter is witnessed by Alexis and Jason. Jason finds “comfort” with Elizabeth. She gets pregnant and now has a “who’s the daddy” drama of her own. Jason tells Sam and once again, she’s the victim. Questioning how could he give a child to Elizabeth but deny her that right (apparently, all Sam wants is Jason’s child). This, of course, is before she goes off on Elizabeth, suggesting that she wants Jason. Then Sam goes on a pity party trip to Nichols and Sonny to do her usual “it’s not fair” rant.

What the hell happened to Sam? Instead of cutting her losses and moving on, she’s crying all the time and too self-consumed with playing the victim to even know if she could stand on her own two feet without Jason. Apparently, the only way she can survive life is by Jason’s side, which is definitely not the Sam of the past.
