Written in 2002 originally for Bella
By Jaclyn Kratzer
I must admit I have not watched General Hospital in awhile until I said
that I would host the site for Bella. Prior to my not watching for a year
I had watched the show for twenty years so I know a lot of the history of
the show and the characters. I, like everyone, have had my favorites and
not - so-favorites. I was really surprised when the first day I started
taping the show again and saw some old characters I was very familiar with
from the past.
The first scene was on the docks with Luke and Laura. I knew they have
been divorced and was wondering where their storyline has been leading
them. First of all I got to say that I was disappointed that the show
writers had chosen to break up a strong couple after all these years, but
I realize that this is a drama and this was a great plot twist to create
drama. As I was watching the show however it was apparent that these two
characters still had feelings for one another and their was still an
attempt to keep them bonded. During that same scene I was surprised to
discover that Laura was still involved with Scotty and that Luke was
jealous. Now even though I know it is 2001 I had to sit back and think of
whether or not I was watching a show in the present time or transported
back to the 1980’s.
This recreation of history was strengthen by the next scene as well. We
saw Bobby and Scotty in the Brownstone. They were painting and having a
good time. It was easy to see that there was still a chemistry between
them. However, they were discussing what they had in common for the past
20 years, Luke and Laura. I once again had to ask myself what the show is
Questions that came into my mind were those about the writer’s intentions.
Are the writer’s trying to regain some of the golden magic they had in the
past by reuniting characters from years gone by? Will viewers buy it or be
tired with rehashing the old times? How will the new generation fit in? I
suppose only time will tell and we will have to tune in and see. I know
that I for one will be anxious to see how it will all gel together and I
anticipate getting to know old friends again and meeting new ones - to be
sucked back into what I consider to be the greatest drama ever created.
The opinions in these articles are those of the writer and do not
necessarily reflect the opinions of The TV MegaSite or its other volunteers.
