VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Hollywood Happenings in the Television World

By Tommy Garrett, 11/23/07

What a week it's been in Hollywood. The strike is in full force, but it has finally started to look like the light is at the end of the tunnel some place. This Thanksgiving, some actors like Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria and others decided to picket in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater with some writers and effectively shut down Hollywood Boulevard to traffic for hours. It did after all catch the attention of people, that's the point, isn't it? The other point is, ABC, FOX, CBS and NBC are very nervous. Shows like "Desperate Housewives," "House" and all of the soaps are very nervous right now. However, a friend who works at a NYC-based soap tells me, "Soap writers will have to cross the picket lines eventually. They are very worried about the state of affairs in daytime soaps and cannot afford to lose more of their already shrinking audience." It was after all just a decade or so ago when the OJ Simpson trial being aired on all the networks interrupting the daytime schedules that caused over four million viewers to leave daytime television, never to return. Only the top-rated soaps like "The Young & the Restless," "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "General Hospital" can afford to lose some fans, and they cannot stand to lose great numbers. But it seems that both sides are preparing to talk after the holidays and some say as early as Monday, November 26.

Then there is the news world. CNN is slipping in the ratings, so is FOX News. Fox has signed Shepard Smith to a long term and lucrative contract. They should use him more often and less of Sean Hannity, and they would probably find a growing audience. As for CNN, their network needs to do better to promote Glenn Beck, who is breaking into Bill O'Reilly's audience on the competing FOX News, and they would find their time slots tightening more as well. Katie Couric is still lagging at the number three spot, but has improved greatly since getting out there and working the stories more. She seems to be doing better reporting than anchoring. Someone has to be in the number three spot, but no one wants to stay there.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has been incredible this season in "The Ghost Whisperer." She's become a very strong actress and her show is creepy and has turned very serious in the spirit world theme. I thought initially that would hurt the show but it has really picked up. She is a good actress and a solid upstanding young lady in Hollywood. I think her audience will continue to grow. That is if the show continues with original episodes. More proof that everything right now depends on the current affairs of the Writer's Strike.

At least shows like Judge Judy will continue filming. Her season has taken off but last year seemed to lag behind a bit. She's been on a while now and maybe her brand of "tell it like it is" was starting to become too hard for audiences to take. She's been appearing in a lot of press and even going to her friend Larry King on a few instances to soften her image up a bit. Judy is a genius, she knows that it's probably time to rein in the attitude, just a bit.
