Emma and Max are standing on the porch of Opal's Boarding House about to ring
"You really shouldn't have done this, Emma," says Max. "First, you just met me
and second, you are now going to get in trouble for being late to a family
"Yes, I just met you, Max; but I have a good feeling we're going to be good
friends. Secondly, don't worry about me being in trouble. I have a "get out of
jail free card" in my pocket that I can use with my dad. Well, let's see if
anyone is home." Emma rings the doorbell.
"Okay, okay," Opal calls out. Hold on just a minute. Opal opens the door to
find Emma standing there with a good-looking young man she has never met before.
"Well, hello, Emma," Opal says. "What can I do for you?"
"May we come in, Opal?" Emma asks. "This is my friend, Max. He's new in town
and looking for a place to stay temporarily. I suggested he come and see you."
"Well, my, my Emma. Aren't you just a little Pine Valley Welcome Wagon."
Please both of you come in. Emma and Max join Opal in the parlor and they all
"So, Max, you just got to town did you?"
"Yes, Miss Opal. Just got off the train a little while ago."
"What exactly brings you to our little neck of the woods?"
"I'm looking for some family that might be in this area."
"Really? Do you have their names? Perhaps I might know them?"
"Unfortunately, I don't. I was placed for adoption when I was born, and the
record was sealed. My adopted father died a few years ago, and my mother passed
just recently. I always knew I was adopted, but my parents said they never knew
anything about my birth parents. I believed them until I was cleaning out my
mom's stuff and found a piece of paper with my name on it and Pine Valley, PA,
written next to it."
"Well, Opal, do you think Max could stay here awhile till he figures out what
he's going to do?" asks Emma.
"Max, this is a boarding house, and it is not free. Do you have the ability to
pay for your stay? I also run a tight ship here and there are house rules which
I expect all my boarders to adhere to."
You don't have to worry about me paying. I have money that was left to me by
my mom, and I will start looking for a job today. I can pay you in advance for a
few weeks stay if that is acceptable. As for the rules, I lead a quiet life and
will follow all the rules you set out."
"Well, then, Max, I guess I'll give you a two-week try. Then we will see
where it goes from there."
"Thank you, Miss Opal. Thank you, Emma," says Max. "Emma, shouldn't you get
going to your party? I'm sure Miss Opal and I can handle things from here."
"Well, I guess my work is done here. Yes, I better get going before even my
'get out of jail free card' is of no use.
As the Slater family walks into the restaurant, they see everyone who has
already arrived busy setting out food or handing out beverages.
Bianca sees her sister first and heads over to greet them. "Hey,
says. "We were getting worried that you hadn't got here yet." Bianca gently
takes Amelia from Kendall so her sister can take off her coat. She kisses Zach,
Kendall, and Ian.
"Well, I'm glad we finally got here. I'm afraid my son Ian has become a
teenager and had definite ideas about what he wanted to wear," says Kendall to
"Well, Aunt Bianca, Mom still thinks I'm a little kid and wants to pick out my
clothes all the time," says Ian. "Dad understands how it is."
"Ian, don't give your mom such a hard time. She stills likes to pick out what
I wear, and I'm at least twice your age," Zach laughs.
Madison and Scott are home and have got the twins to bed. They sit down on
the sofa and both agree they need to talk about Scott's idea.
"Are you really serious about wanting me to host the show? There have to be
so many other more qualified women out there to do it."
"Yes, there might be other women out there, but I read the ratings the day you
hosted as well as the emails and comments on our Facebook page and all of them
"What about my work at The Miranda Center? Also who will watch the girls?"
"You can definitely continue your work at The Center. I would never ask you to
give that up. You make a real difference there. As for the girls, perhaps in the
beginning we can enlist Marian and Stuart and eventually if need be, hire a
"Well, I did have one idea about the show if I can make a request. I thought
it might be interesting to select women with diverse backgrounds and professions
and have them on to co-host. We would pick someone depending on what the show's
topic is for that day. What do you think?
"I think that's a great idea. See, I told you that you're a natural at
Emma arrives at the party and breezes in looking spectacular in her new
outfit. She sees her dad across the room with Greenlee and Spike and mouths to
him she is sorry for being late. She then spots out AJ and Miranda and decides
to go over and stir up the pot a little.
Reggie is walking to the back of the house to check the sliding patio door
and the kitchen door, too. He still has his headphones on, so he can only hear his
music. Tim decides to go around the house but from the opposite direction. He
finally comes close to the hooded stranger and calls out to him, "Police, stop
and put your hands up!" Reggie, of course, can't hear him and he innocently turns
toward Tim who is standing there holding a gun at his side. Reggie goes to take
his headphones off and suddenly a gun shot is heard.
